My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Congrats once again! Will there be a physical CD release as well? (if so ..I'll buy one). Not really into the mp3 scene, though I'll go with a d/l if there's no CD option.. ;)

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Thanks!

Yes, this is a digital-only release. Mechanicals are not in the budget, unfortunately.

Hey Bro- I have not been able to spin this thing all at once, but listen in drips and drabs. If I did not suck at music reviews, I would do something, lol.

Bottom line- Killer guitars. Nice tuneage. Nice production. I totally dig it. I like it better than the TO CD, and I really liked that. Did you ever release something for Phantom Isle? I cannot recall.

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Phantom Isle is done and in the can, but never released, sadly. Every now and then I get the urge to remix it and master/release it myself ... but I am too busy/having too much fun with this stuff!! :)

Thanks for the kind words.

Damn, that's too bad..I was hoping to add to my collection haha. But yeah, understandable man...I'll get it all the same though :)

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Thanks for your support! Who knows, if this album does well enough (ie, break even) I may be able to get some CDs made for the next album (already under full steam).

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Hell yeah man! How exciting -- will give it a solid listen tonight with headphones but got side one playing now and I'm really impressed with your voice! Very powerful projection.

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Looking forward to your final impressions; I think it's a good headphone album, personally.
Thanks so much for your kind words about the vox; I will let Gary (the singer) know -- I did EVERYTHING on the album but the lead vocals lol! :)

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Haha -- Gary has this crazy Dio vibe to his voice, which is like, hilarious but also really cool, because who actually sounds that much like Dio? So because of that some of the finer moments on the album reminded a lot of Rainbow. Production wise the whole thing had a real 70s vibe. Sometimes the drums seemed a little too rigid and dry, but the guitar had this real cool raw 70s sound to it. I was impressed with the way you moved between elements of different rock genres and even threw in a little funk at one point! (yeah don't think I didn't hear that! haha). I heard definite Sabbath influences in the down tempo parts. Some of your clean transitions even reminded me slightly of Opeth in their folksy approach. And of course, I appreciated the bleeps and bloops, all the interesting synth sounds you used -- was that some moog I heard at one point?

Anyway, as a music listener I haven't revisited classic sort of heavy-metal like this in quite some time, so it took my ears some time to adjust so I could take it seriously. I think I would have preferred less use of distortion, or perhaps just a different type of distortion, but like I said earlier, you DID nail that classic sound in a really cool way. I found that I liked side 2 much more for some reason -- to the point where I kind of just forgot it was playing and enjoyed listening to you shred it up on guitar. I think my overall impression is that I liked your spirit of rocking your heart out, and it evoked nostalgia because 10 years ago this would have been my jam for sure... it still can be in the right context. I've veered fairly heavily toward more abstract aesthetics over the years, but I'd totally rock this in the car with the windows down on a Friday night!

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

AmirH, thanks so much for your detailed and thoughtful breakdown.
Cannot disagree with any of it. :)
I agree with your impression of the drums, and it is one of my foci for the next album.
I think side 1 has a slightly more organic flow than side 2, but I also feel that the overall material on side 2 is stronger, with a good and proper epic solo!

It was a great pleasure for me to take as much time as I did working on the guitar parts and then crafting the ideal tone for each part. I used MANY amp/speaker/pedal combinations on this one. Wish I had taken more accurate notes lol.

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

A quick bump to say THANK YOU to everyone that has supported the album thus far. :)

Also, the review offer still stands -- write a review of the album, receive a free CD.

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Got the first published review of The Eye Of Fire And Fear today -- in the latest issue of Sound On Sound magazine, no less! And shocker of shockers -- they didn't absolutely hate it!! I'm actually quite floored by the response, though those back handed compliments can really sting lol.

Here it is:
"Nothing can strike more fear into the heart of a Playback reviewer than the words "single, 51‑minute-long piece” (although there are some close contenders, namely "experimental”, "free‑form", concept” and "transcendental”). But such is the hand I've been dealt by Ben Asaro, otherwise known as As Follows, who not only wrote all 51 minutes of this Edgar Allen Poe‑inspired prog‑rock epic, but also played every instrument on it. And, despite my trepidation, it's actually pretty decent. Fortunately for the listener, it's also broken up into fairly distinct chunks — so you don't feel like you've been sitting listening to the same song for almost an hour; in fact the experience is more akin to an album in which the inter‑track segways have been paid close attention to.

That's not to say it doesn't have its moments of dragging (from around minute 20 to minute 23 it does get a little, ahem, 'atmospheric' for my taste), but it's otherwise surprisingly engaging, especially for a classic prog‑rock affair. "

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

It's an awesome listen man, so many twists & turns & I love the way there's a different sweet guitar tone around every corner. The vintage synth sounds killer & your vocalist does a great job jamming along with all the crazy stuff that's going on..haha...nice voice too. I don't really listen to a lot of old prog rock except for Goblin, Yes & some ELP & your stuff fits alongside that pretty comfortably.... has that cool analog/vintage vibe to the sound too..

Congrats on being accepted into prog archives :)

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Thanks so much!

It was, in fact, mixed in analogue with no recall or automation. All of the reverb, delay/echo, and modulation are outboard effects, and panning/level rides were done in real time as well. I had to use some plugins, of course; notably tape saturation, EQ (big fan of Melda's MEqualizer) and compression.

Hard at work on the follow up album -- working on song 3 now. I am collaborating w London-based session drummer, Claire Brock on this one. :)

Re: My new album available for download/streaming -- THE EYE OF FIRE AND FEAR

Cool..well it sounds great..looking forward to that new one, good luck with it....an actual drummer will make a positive difference as well.. :)
