My New Favorite Les Paul Pickup Combo

59 in the bridge, APH in the neck.

I installed these pups before I went to Odie's house to have the nuts on both my lesters redone. I played it through his JCM 900, and so did Brisk. The 59" in the bridge seemed not clear enough, slightly dull...not biting enough. I was really dissapointed.

However, I plugged it into my newly repaired and cosmetically improved Marshall this afternoon...and it was just what I was looking for. Nice and crunchy, without being overly bright or crisp. No icepicky highs like I usually find in A5 buckers. It matches perfectly with the APH in the neck. Perhaps the slightly lower DC resistance is what I needed in the bridge, and is what makes it sound so good to my ears. Of course they are both double cream, which makes them sound that much better!

It definately did not work in Odie's amp, but his 900 is a little darker and more grainy than my 800. Mine has more top end, clarity and bite. I am also using G12T-75's, and Odies cab is V30 loaded...this will make a difference as well.

Thumbs up for this combo. Brisk...you need to try it through my amp now brother!

Jeff, I find that acoustics of a room make a huge difference also. Before we moved, I had my amps dialed in to exactly where I wanted them but, after the move, I had to re-tweak everything. Speakers also make a difference. I have never played the 75's through a slant cab, only a straight cab so I cant say for certain. I would love to hear the two rigs side by side. Plus, I doubt my speakers are even broken in yet. That may play a roll also. If I remember correctly, I think the V30's have more mids and the 75's have more highs and bass. I dont remember exactly though.

Yeah, that's true Odie. The room I have my amp in is similar in size to yours, standard height ceilings, carpet, ect. Right now I'm playing just thru the speakers in the combo, and it is a partial open back....so that affects the sound as well...not quite as much bass and a little more treble and mids get into the room. Also, these speakers are 20 years old, original to the amp and well broken in. I'll have to re-dial it I'm sure after I get the 4x12 back.

You're also right on the sound of the speakers....the G12T's have more of a "V" shape to the eq frequency, while the 30's are much more prominent in the mids and smoother on the highs. I'll bring the amp up when I come to get my truck, and we can try them side by side, and thru your cab.

Don't forget that you have to break-in your ears, too... And yes, low impedance Alnico V PAFs at the bridge also rule in both of my Les Paul copies (Shaw PAF with 7.3 kOhm and DiMarzio PAF with 7.6 kOhm).

Here's a little bump for those who haven't read this.

The more I play with this setup, the more I like it. It works with my amp perfectly. Perhaps it's having a slightly underwound pup in the bridge? It's slightly less prominent on the highs, but still almost as tight on the lows as the 59'TB I have in annother guitar. The 59' in the bridge has just the right amount of bite without being harsh on the highs...and it sounds just slightly fuller on the mids.

Really cool setup.

Are you sure? I thought zebra's sounded better than double-cream's. :laugh2: :laugh2:
