My new G&L totally kicks butt. 10 outta 10

Very nice. I almost got one of those myself. Is it a 12" fretboard?

Yeah it's 12" on a full round back C....feels great.

I put the C-5 trem in there, since they're one of the few hot humbuckers that mates well with vintage singles. It's a fairly resonant, hollow, and punchy sounding guitar, so I may do a lot of experimenting with pickups on this one. I plan on dialing this thing in as my new main player, so I may get fatter, less hollow pickups in it. It sounds great right now, but I'm starting to think that the best combo will be trem CC and 2 Fender Fat 50's.
Fat 50's, IMO, are the best vintage singles to mate with Duncan humbuckers.
That's why they use Fat 50's with 59's and JB's in the Fender Custom Shop HSS strats.

Re: My new G&L totally kicks butt. 10 outta 10

Would Fat 50 work well with a CC if they work well with a 59 and JB? It's kind of a different flavour for a bridge pickup.

I wouldn't mind putting a CC in my Anderson but I am:

- afraid to spoil it's looks
- having doubts which pot to leave (500 or 250k)

Re: My new G&L totally kicks butt. 10 outta 10

that makes me want to try a C5 in my strat... what do you think, will a C5 go well with 2 alnico 2 pro singles?

Oops, now I'm closer.

Well I'll be, there's an axe that is identical to that in my local shop. I was gushing over it the other day when I was in. Too cool!!

Re: My new G&L totally kicks butt. 10 outta 10

I've been a fan of G&L's for a few years, started out with an ASAT (tele style), I've had a standard legacy and I've moved up to a Legacy Deluxe. The legacy deluxe has a #4 neck, a little wider than the standard neck, "C" shaped - fits perfect - G&L is one of the few companies where you can order several different neck shapes without any extra cost. I'm happy with the pickups, mine has a one piece mahogany back and a book matched flamed maple top - the G&L singles and the JB (which I normally don't like) sound great - I have no plan on changing any of them (but that always changes!!). My only issue is after having the guitar for a month a stain has come up on the body, like oil or moisture is darkening the wood- I'm taking it to G&L Monday, guess I'll get to test their customer service now.

G&L by FAR!!

G&L also have a MIJ series, which are also better, IMO. They don't skimp on the pickups or hardware

?
Is the G&L MIA better or the G&L MIJ?

Re: My new G&L totally kicks butt. 10 outta 10

The US G&L's are in the same class as Fender Custom Shop, Anderson, Grosh, and Suhr. They use basically the same grade materials and are built by top notch luthiers.
G&L's vary a lot though, so you're safer playing one before buying. I've rolled the dice 3 times, and 2 outta 3 were gems, the other one was just OK.

The C-5 sounds great in mahogany/maple guitars, but is a matter of preference in alder, basswood, or ash. I like the stringy quality of it, since it's not too bulky in the mids, but it can sound hollow in strats. Out of most of the high output Duncans, I think it's the most versatile, but the JB and CC still sound a bit meatier for single notes.

As soon as I get home, I'm gonna change the strings and work on the setup a bit, but this is another killer G&L I've owned. The Invader I'm selling for $750 is also a killer one, but I'm just selling it to pay for this one.

GJ, How do the two compare from a playability standpoint - are the necks different and what size frets do these guitars have?

I just put a C5 in my Genny, about 30 minutes ago, with my Quarter Pounds. Tapped, or full-on, they play great together. :)

Its a killer combo. ;)

Hey Sprinter-

What's the difference between the S-500's and Legacy's? About all I can get from the website is the mini-toggle and tuners. Anything else?

Looks like you've got one heckuva collection-very nice!

Thanks,
Dave

Re: My new G&L totally kicks butt. 10 outta 10

I've been playing this guitar all weekend with the Trem C-5 and 2 stock G&L singles.
This guitar will be my main guitar for a few years, I anticipate. This model of G&L is one of the best guitars I've ever had. Just a badass guitar!! Sounds just as good as my Les Pauls, even though it's a thin maple cap on highgrade Basswood, not thick maple on mahogany. It still has that big articulate tone, though.

I've decided that the G&L singles really suck....weak and thin. Now, I have to find the perfect hot vintage singles to go with the C-5, which sounds great in it.
I think I may go with 2 Fat 50's, since those never let me down.

The G&L Invader I have for sale is also a great guitar with a birdseye maple neck, although it's a bit thinner and faster playing. It has nicely crowned jumbo frets for low action and plenty of grip on the note. G&L does that on the Invaders to make them play smoother with great action. It also has a Floyd. The satin finish makes the guitar resonate better.
