My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

Hey Guys.
So check out my new gear. I walked into the local music store just trying out various cutaway accoustics. I had my eye on a yamaha... but then I stumbled onto this. Its a japanese takamine with a AD-1 preamp. The guitar plays wonderfully and it was comparable to a $3500 taylor I tried next to it.
It also has onboard tuner, reverb, and 19 programmable presets. The reverb sounds great. It has a solid spruce top, rosewood sides and back, colored wooden inlays and mahogany neck. It was used, and I got it for 650 CAD.

I bought this one yesterday. Its an Ibanez RG270. I went to the site and it doesn't look like they make them anymore. I'm very impressed with this one as well. Low action and LOADS of sustain. This thing sustains past my Les Paul. 150 CAD with hardshell case... I got it from a metal player who never used it. Its practically a new guitar. I can't put it down right now. Playing Satch tunes and jamming with backing tracks.

Okay here's scalloping project #1:
Yamaha Pacifica tele. I did a deep scallop on an already thin neck. It improved the guitar by much I'd say. I don't know if this makes sense, but sustain has gotten better. Bends and vibrato are WORLDS BETTER now. It was the best improvement I could've done to this guitar.

Scalloping project #2:
Yet another telecaster. This is the one i built myself from parts.
I decided to get a bit creative for this one. I scalloped the top 5 frets using the conventional way. The rest were scalloped in a "Nike" swoosh shape...
I figured, if you are fretting directly behind the fret like mr. Eric Johnson teaches, you might as well scallop deeper there, and not so deep everywhere else... What do you guys think?? I'm surely digging it right now.

And here's a family picture of all my toys.

Nice gear man!

The scalloping jobs look very very regular, impressive.

That Takamine looks very nice, love the color...

That RG looks good too... I've got a 570 and I can't find a better neck when I wanna play metal, these are good guitars if you find one that resonates and that feels like you want it.

Congrats!

Hehe American flag in your home?
I like the 'stairs' scalloping job! The theory makes real sense, but what different does it make otherwise?

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

Thanks guys.

Pierre, I think the only difference is: you're taking out less wood from the neck. I also made it quite deep directly behind the fret - so your finger kinda falls into a groove there - but otherwise same scalloped feel. Because the drop off behind the fret is so steep - it can become harder to slide upward, so you needa watch your technique and maintain a light touch :)

That's a unique way of scalloping, but it looks cool at the same time. I'm surprised you didn't run into problems with the dots.

That Takamine looks like it sounds great. Nice stable of fiddles there!

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

I think you may be on to something with the stairstep scalloping, in case you ever make your own line of guitars, that's a good trademark!

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

didn't the bond (wierd plastic fretboard guitar) use that in the 80s? the slanted scalloping I mean.

looks delish B)

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

where's that scallopwned picture . . . no thread with scalloping is complete without that! Nice guitars btw . . . how does the 'nike' scallop play?

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

nicely done, you got skillz ... i'd like to try a scallopped board sometime, but i think i am entirely too hamfisted to keep it together ...

Great guitars, but the scalloping thing really bothers me. That's just my opinion though no hard feelings! What amps are you playing through?

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

I'm surprised a certain somebody hasn't posted the "scallopwned!" photo.

Nice job. I'm not really a fan of it but it certainly looks cool. Have you got any sound clips? I'd be interested in hearting how it sounds...

Look above a couple of posts man, its there minus the red lettering.

A> Nice axes man, sweet deal on that Ibanez.
B> Where the hell is your Canadian flag man???
C> I'm scalloping a guitar myself soon, just got to go get the dremel.

Oh yeah! Too many late nights for me!

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

I didn't use a dremel, if you're wondering. They're both hand filed. I use 2 round files and one large flat file. In addition to that, I have a set of miniature hobby files to fine tune and smoothe everything out. I think I'm gonna do a tutorial on scalloping with pictures a little later, because I took pictures of the progress.

Closed eye, I'll record a jamming mp3 to a backing track with the Nike telecaster when I get home, so check back at night.

Thanks for looking guys!

B Bent: I'm playing through a fender blues junior Limited edition. It has a Jensen C12 (I think) speaker in it. I'm running 5 pedals. Check my signature

Nice job... funny I am going to Scalopp my V this weekend most probably... I have been puting it on hold for weeks... at least from the 12 fret on wards

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

1. Acoustic is awesome!

2. Scalloping a Tele is a sin. I'm sure it's great, but I can't look at it without feeling a bit sick.

3. What's with the American flag, traitor? :)

Re: My new guitars + scalloping projects. *PICS* *PICS* *PICS*

Dude, get a Canadian flag up there, stat! Especially this weekend. Shame on you.
