My new Les Paul is here!

Well, the Les Paul I bought on Ebay recently finally arrived yesterday! It's a 1991 Classic, and differs in several ways from the current production Classics. It doesn't have those greenish inlays or tuning pegs, it has a plain truss rod cover, the serial number is a 5-digit ink stamped one and the pickups (as far as I can tell so far) are '57 Classics, not the 500T/496R combo. It does have the slim 60s profile neck and a scratchplate with 1960 engraved (though the gold has worn off).

I was pretty apprehensive about this purchase as, in 30 years of playing, I've never bought a guitar before that I hadn't played. I needn't have worried - this guitar is a killer! :D The slim neck immediately feels right - I don't have big hands and this guitar is an absolute delight to play. I took it to band practice last night and it sounded excellent through my JTM60. I've yet to examine or measure the pickups to ascertain that they are '57 Classics - my initial impression is that they are hotter than the Seths in my Standard, but not overly hot. The cleans are warm and I'm pretty confident these aren't ceramics! Another surprise, and again I haven't ascertained this yet, is that the volume knobs have a rolloff that seems to me much more like audio taper than linear. I had a peep inside the control cavity and all the wiring looks original (and yes, there is a metal plate), but the volumes seem a lot more responsive than the 300k linears that were originally in my Standard. At some point I'll take note of the numbers on the pots and investigate further.

Enough trainspotting, I played this guitar loud last night and it all works just fine! While waiting for it I'd been mulling over ideas for pots/caps/pickups upgrades, but from what I've experienced so far I think I may not need to change anything. It's a damn fine guitar, and may not need fixing! OK, I've done one little mod already - straplocks - but I think the rest can wait. I'm just gonna spend some quality time with this one before I start taking it all apart. :)

Here are some rather hurriedly taken pics. They don't really do the top justice, except the last one which does capture the birdseye effect. This is a really nice looking guitar. Interesting, but not overstated. :approve:

I'm in love. :32:

Re: My new Les Paul is here!

if that was a plaintop in that color, i would be forced to hop a plane to the u.k., and steal it ;);)

what a beautiful guitar!

Re: My new Les Paul is here!

thats gorgeous...when I'm a bit older I'd like to get another paul...maybe a gold top, as well as another tele. By the way how do you like your jtm60 compared to your jubilee?

They're both excellent. The Jubilee is one of Marshall's undoubted classics and has killer rock tone. Think Slash! The JTM60 is obviously built to a lower budget and intended to appeal to a wider market. It's the most versatile amp I've ever owned - I could take it to an audition and get pretty much any sound I needed. Unusually for a Marshall it has a great clean channel, that crosses into vintage rock as you turn the volume up. I know there were some reliability issues with JTM60s in some parts of the world, but I bought mine new in '97 and apart from a little trouble with a tube base when it was new it's been totally reliable. JTM60s and JTM30s are definitely worth looking out for on Ebay - they're great amps but not a lot of people know it!

Re: My new Les Paul is here!

Looking at those pics makes me understand exactly why Gibson would want to trademark that guitar shape. Nothing is quite like a good Les Paul. I'm glad you didn't the puke green inlay/button thing. It's a personal pet peeve of mine. Great score mano!

Re: My new Les Paul is here!

I hate you :P

As if you didn't make me spend enough money when you gave me GAS for a JTM60, now you're making me want another Les Paul! :smack:

Re: My new Les Paul is here!

Nice keeper! It's cool to have Les Pauls with different necks and pickups. Actually, it's just cool to have as many Les Pauls as humanly possible. Ha

Re: My new Les Paul is here!

I've been really curious about these pickups. I e-mailed Gibson with the serial number and they confirmed it is a 1991 Classic and was originally sold in Japan. (That'll explain why the owner's manual I got with it is in Japanese :D ). Gibson also said that the original pickups would have been 500T/496R. A/B-ing them with the Seths in my Standard I couldn't believe they were ceramics, so I had to lift them out and have a look (see latest pics). They both have Patent Applied For stickers on the bottom, and the neck pickup has solder marks that suggest it once had a cover on. I looked in the control cavity again and now I think I do see evidence that someone has been in there! Obviously these aren't the original pickups, and I can only guess they are '57 Classics - or real PAFs. :laugh2:

I'm certain the volume pots are audio tapers too - the rolloff is identical to the CTS 500k audios I fitted in my Standard. :22:

OK, I'll shut up now and go and play it. Thanks for listening. :burnout:
