My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

Hello everyone, I just created this account to say this:

I just installed a brand new Seymour Duncan Antiquity II for Jazzmaster Neck, and there is no sound coming out of it. After further inspection, I noticed that there is no pickup wire coming from the winding to the + pole of the pickup!!

I already contacted Seymour Duncan and Banzaimusic.com (the online shop I bought it from) and still got no anwser. I live in Portugal and the store is from Germany by the way.

I feel really infuriated that I spent about 100 euro for trash!!!!

Welcome to the forum.

Assuming that your pickup arrived in a sealed box, it is difficult to determine when and where the coil got broken. (It is difficult to imagine the man himself or MJ cocking up the assembly process.)

Inspect the soldering eye where the coil ought to end. If the pickup was assembled correctly, there will be at least two turns of copper wire through the eyelet and wrapped around the outer edge of the vulcanised fibreboard plate.

If there is copper wire around the edge of the fibreboard plate, logically, there must be a broken end somewhere on the outer surface of the coil itself.

If you can find the broken end, the pickup is repairable.

Alternatively, contact the retailer.

Re: My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

There are indeed some turns of copper wire wrapped around the outer edge, but I can't find the broken end anywhere, the winding is a solid block with no ends sticking out of it.

I have contacted the retailer, and hope this matter will be solved soon. It's my first experience with Seymour Duncan and I hope this event is sort of the exception to the rule...

Re: My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

How far does the coil bulge along its longer sides? Enough to stand proud of the fibreboard plates? This is the point at which the plastic cover could sever the coil. This is where I would look for the broken end.

It must certainly is... SD is going to be a bit busy with NAMM, so a delay is to be expected.

Now that Marceau's on the case, I'm sure it will be handled adequately. Scott is a great guy but then again, so is everybody at Seymour Duncan's.

good choice on the pickup by the way. i have the same set in my jazzmaster. beautiful tones.

Re: My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

Deep breath. Seymour Duncan does right by its customers. Inspector Marceau is on the case. He's like Inspector Clouseau, except with a multi-meter instead of a magnifying glass.

Patience - I have faith it will get worked out.

Re: My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

Well quick update, everything went well, I sent the pickup back and promptly got sent a replacement by my retailer.
I installed it two days ago, and it has been a good two days, except for my sore fingers.

Thank you for your help

Re: My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

That's just how Duncan rolls.

Glad you dig it!

Yup, they take care of their customers. I had one dead on arrival too. will get a new one as well. there were 2 places where this pickup was dead. First, when I took the pickup out of the box, the wire from the bobbin towards the lead was broken (it's a strat pickup). So I fixed that first. but there's a second short, deeper inside the coil. Can't fix that, unfortunately.

I have installed multiple pickups in the past in my guitars, but never SDs. This will of course change, because I've never heard any clean tones more beautiful than what my Jazzmaster now does

Re: My new Seymour Duncan pickup is dead on arrival!!

I'm glad you're up and running! Anyone you talk with or email here at Seymour Duncan is a player and all of us were using Seymour Duncan before we even started here so it's very personal to us when someone isn't perfect.

Great post, one of the reasons I will be getting Blackouts for Metal, since Seymour Duncan really stands behind their products(I am not an experienced guitar player, but am always looking to make things sound better)

I am not an active guy - but I really love my Blackout. And it is way more flexible if you really use the volume control.
