My new Squier J5 Tele!

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

I always liked the J5 tele's, that's cool they made a squier version.

At $379, it seems like one of the most expensive Squiers ever. I remember only a couple of years ago you could buy an actual Fender MIM Strat or Tele for $299, then it went up to $319... then $349 for the longest time.

I'm not a huge fan of the switch placement on it, the control plate looks kind of empty, but it is a pretty cool Tele anyways. And ya, $379 is a little bit expensive in my mind. I paid $379 Canadian for my MIM Tele.

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

Personally, I love the switch placement. Reminds me of Les Pauls and Tele customs. Both of which I have no problem with the switching on.

And I BARELY even remember when MIM strats were that cheap. But Chinese factories have higher standards for wood working and that sort of thing, so I think I like where my money's gone. Take that, replace the electronics and you've got a force to be reckoned with.

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

cool man! i may have to make one of these my next guitar:naughty: btw under the control plate, is it hollow where the 3-way switch would normally be, with enough room for another pot and/or switch?

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

Haha, I'm glad you guys are enjoying the pictures! Taking pictures is also another hobby of mine--so why not combine the two?

And I'll check later today about the control plate. I don't have any of my gear with me, sorry.

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

I'm lookin' to replace the neck humbucker as well as the bridge. i know the bridge has to be F-spaced, but does the neck 'bucker as well?

I'm pretty excited to be turning this into my first tuner guitar but just want to make sure everything's correct.

so what kinda mods are ya gonna do besides new pickups? new pots/cap? push pulls? alternative wirings? inquiring mind(s) wanna know!

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

Oh yeah, without a doubt. I'm going to completely gut this guitar and put quality parts it.

I can tell it has a lot of potential, but the stock electronics (as you might imagine) aren't particularly good. The guitar needs to be completely re-wired and grounded so all the hum will go away, because NONE of my guitars are that noisy.

Probably put some graphite saddles in and perhaps some locking tuners. Maybe a rolling nut.

I'm looking to basically convert it into a MODERN Telecaster Plus.

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

I like your attitude. :D

It looks badass! Congratulations on a nice buy.

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

Well thanks! I'm not really sure whether you mean my disposition or what i'm looking to do with this potentially good axe, haha. Thanks either way, though!

I played it a bit today, I'm thinking the C8 might be a bit too much! Hopefully, it won't overdrive the clean of my Mesa. I'll be real sad.

Re: My new Squier J5 Tele!

I know this is an old thread, but I'm not sure if you got the hum sorted out. I replaced the bridge P/U and added a push/pull pot and the hum went away. It's like they all hum new, for some reason, but I couldn't find a ground issue - it's like the bridge p/u had the hum inside of it.

I've had probably around 30 guitars in my lifetime, and this cheap thing remains one of the (if not THE) best playing/feeling/sounding guitars I've ever touched. I got it thinking it'd be my "beater" guitar, but have babied it because it's too nice to not care about. It's a keeper, for probably my lifetime.
