My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Just plugged in today after work. Everything looked fine. Tubes glowing, Jewel turned on....no sound at all

Checked dials, guitar , cables....all the obvious stuff seemed ok

I'll recheck again tomorrow but what else am I missing?

Speaker ? Although i'll assume you have checked that, and substitued every sonic link (guitar, cable on the input side, speaker lead, speaker cab on the output side). Does that amp feature a standby switch ? If you turn all the amps controls up without playing, can you hear any hiss or humm through the speaker ?

When an amp itself seems to be the culprit, but the power light comes on and the tubes glow, that can often mean there is a break in the signal path somewhere in the amp's circuitry. (some amps may have a secondary fuse, in the high-DC voltage line ... if that fuse blows, there will be no sound, but the heaters and power lamp will still light up). If the amp has an effects loop, you can try plugging a jack plug in and out of the sockets a few times, or even linking the loop output and return input with a short guitar cable.

What Crusty said. I'd start by swapping tubes. The amp is solidly made, but there's 4 tubes that can fail and shut it down, whether they're glowing or not.

Fuses and tubes. You still running the tubes that came with it when. I shipped it?

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

And definitely check the speaker. I had this issue with my DSL. Bought new tubes, speaker cable, fuses. Nothing worked. Ended up being a blown speaker.

Jeff-yes, still running same tubes. Reaching in there freaks me out

Tried new cable, guitar, speaker. Nothing.

I'm guessing something blew or a tube got unseated?

Tubes and fuses are the first things to check/replace...IME, JJ tubes cook easily. I have had to replace several el84s and ecc83s' in 3 different amps.

If you are not comfortable doing that, take it to a tech.

What will a blown tube look like?

Anything from nothing obvious to blackened badly inside or all white inside [ if it's been cracked and the gas has escaped ]. Maybe a melted socket [ this happened to me long ago ]

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

Just took a peak

Nothing super obvious like you'd expect with a blown light bulb or something

Might be beyond me

Gas? I always thought they were vacuum tubes.

Well I have seen a tube that eventually failed first develop a purple glow inside which I think indicated air starting to leak into the tube. I think the white powdery residue is the result of filaments vaporizing after this occurs.

There are gas filled electron tubes. They are called thyratrons. The gas may be mercury vapor, or helium, hydrogen..... They are used as mechanical actuators in some cases or pulsers for radar and lazer systems and so forth.

Re: My Orange OR15 head just crapped out. Need help

The big enemy of large glass envelope vacuum tubes or tubes that have not been regularly operated is gas. This is especially true with graphite anode tubes, with the porous graphite tending release trapped gas, and tubes with large diameter leads protruding through glass seals

Their distinctive orange, red, or purple glow during operation indicates the presence of gas; electrons flowing in a vacuum do not produce light within that region
Output tubes regularly glow purple and they are fine.

The white powdery stuff is the getter flash which is kinda dark silvery/metallic looking when the tube's fine, and it's meant to react with gases which might leak inside the tube and keep the vacuum. If the vacuum's been broken, all of the getter flash has reacted and turned into the white powdery stuff. :)

Oh, OK. Always good to learn something new.

Ironic question, considering the case of the disappearing spare tubes fiasco....., but do you have any spare el84s?
