my pedals need a board

Re: my pedals need a board

Just me and my opinion, but the ToneLab LE is a more "toneful" unit...That lil ole 12AX7 it uses in it's Valve Reactor stage really works! I'm pretty fussy about my tone, but I've got some great presets dialed into this thing...At least worth checking out....The Boss stuff tends to be very deep and harder to learn on..I also did look into some of the multi Boss boards..
the ME70 is so easy a caveman could use it,I would use it mainly in stompbox mode,Im pretty happy with my Ultra's tone and the Blackstar
.
Can you run the VoX without its amp models?

Re: my pedals need a board

Just start with what you need...if you don't need a router/loooper at this point then don't get one and if you don't need a specific pedal on the board then don't put it there.

Do it all slowly...there is no need to run out and drop $350 on stuff right this minute.

Re: my pedals need a board

I downsized my giant pedalboard and came up with this. Since I had leftover Tolex I made a matching board. 3/4" 12 ply birch, I actually copied those pricey Trailer Trash board designs, right down to the side grab handles. I use black headliner fabric on the mounting board, velcro sticks like mad to that. I predrilled the holes for the George Ls to run under the board, razorblade slits and push the cables through. I'm pretty sure this is my final pedalboard...:cool2: Good luck with yours KD.

The Boss unit I didn't care for(or I would have bought that unit)....It's easy to use,but it has alot of menu stuff in it that I didn't care for...Again different strokes, plus I've been hip to alot of what Vox/Korg has come out with...

Are you talking about just using the effects section of the ToneLab? Yes you can shut the emulators and the amp models off...

I'd love to have a Vox Night Train....Down the road I will...

Man, Your green gear makes me drool
And I know in my heart that simplicity really is going to go the farthest in the long run, from tone to operation to looks.
I just got to narrow it down and pull the trigger.
Thanks guys for all the input

Nice looking board there buddy! I also had a Sparkle Drive that I tweaked out,but sold it on a wimb...I Like it better than any Tube Screamer! I kept my TS 808 though... ;o)

Re: my pedals need a board

I just thought of something,I havent tried to drive my dirty channel with a Wylde overdrive yet...better add 4 more inches to my board :saeek:

Re: my pedals need a board

Thanks guys. I actually added 2 more pedals than I designed the board for...I was trying very hard to keep the board small...I tell ya, tone lust never ends...but it's fun.

Re: my pedals need a board

I have a GodLyke power supply that works fine on upto 5 pedals, I think I will buy another to chain the rest together, they are relatively cheap, and Im broke.

Running multiple power supplies is a great way to introduce buzzes & hums since there's multiples paths to ground... not something you really want to do! Get a good power supply and you'll never think about it again.

The Pedal Power is really solid & will power anything & everything... what I ended up with, and might be a good option for you... since you need a board too, is one of the Gators. I got their small board with power supply for a little north of $100 total. The psu has both 9 and 18 volt taps & I haven't had noise issues with anything I've put on. Not quite as robust as the PP... more inline with the Dunlop brick. But the board & supply were only slightly more then the Brick!

Second thing, with that many pedals a loop-master bypass box will clean up the direct sound and eliminate A LOT of tap-dancing. He also makes some bypass boxes that are designed to go in the FX loop and function as the channel switcher... or you could get something totally custom too.

When it comes to physical layout I'll turn things sideways & stuff 'em on there anyway possible. My only "rule" is that stepping over things is fine, so long as I'm not stepping over knobs & knocking settings out of place.

Best place to start though is with simple... figuring out which pedals in what order generate the sounds you want to hear!

Honestly though... my board is ALWAYS changing depending on the gig. Only pedals that are always there are my loop-master dual bypass box, univibe (usually!) and a delay, all going into the front of the amp. Not even the tuner... usually there, not always. My wah pedal lives off the side of the board, not on the board itself.

thanks for pointing that out, makes perfect sence, but Im sure i would have overlooked it.
I have been checking out Loopmaster's stuff , Im starting to think I will end up with a temporary board until I can pull everything together.

Re: my pedals need a board

Rather then a "temp" board look at the Gators... there's a large & a small, they're economical and they don't suck either. Nice angle, sturdy enough to survive a car crash (!!!) and the power supply comes premounted on the bottom of the boards.

I've been abusing mine for about a year and a half... no problems, issues or regrets.

Re: my pedals need a board

I had a rondo board for a little bit... not very roadworthy. Not even for crosstown gigs, there were a few times when the lid popped off in transit... and the velcro back they use kinda sucks.

IMO $100 for a board, power supply and case is pretty friendly... especially for something that's an actual solution rather then a temporary solution. I'm all for cheap gear, but when its as cheap as it is cheap...

Re: my pedals need a board

100 is quite friendly, especially if it has a power supply.

Indeed! I was sort of expecting it to suck a bit over time but its been good to me. I debated between the $100 small board and the larger one, went with the smaller because I typically only use 3-4 pedals at a given time and the small holds about 7-8 boss sized boxes.

This is the one i bought; I think its the overall best deal in an off the shelf board... quality is typical compared to the SKBs and whatnot if not better. The wallwart on the PSU is a bummer & somewhat clunky but I ziptied it to an extension cord and stuff the whole thing into the case. Speaking of, the stash pocket on the case is HUGE. Really gig friendly.

I think when I get some money, I'm gonna have to buy that. It'll allow me to use one power strip instead of two for my two rigs.

Wonder if it'd power my Silver Dragon... EDIT: Nope... but at least I'll have enough room on power strip for it. I need to buy one of these when I get my magnets.
