Re: My Rig 08

Are you a player or a collector? lol All my stuff gets used... doesn't do me any good sitting around looking pretty. From a pure investment standpoint I'd rather have $4k in the market...

Nah, to me there's player guitars and then some I'd like to keep minty.
The market? I'd rather have a guitar that doesn't lose value, and in today's stock market that $4000 would have been lost most likely.

I love nice instruments, but there's ones I've designated as beaters, and ones I haven't. I still like playing them though.

That's one thing I like about the Fenders, since I play Fenders a lot. If one of those $700 guitars got beat up, I'd say "ah, whatever." If that Black Beauty, the Jubilee, or the Matchless got torn up, I'd have a heart attack! LOL

The Goldtop and sunburst strat were my main guitars for a long time, and they've got dings. I don't even care about that, because they're players.
The Black Beauty won't be one of them, but the 335 will. No matter what, the 335 is designated as a 'player.' It'll make me sick if it gets dinged, but I've already told myself the 335 is going to be in rotation.

The Black Beauty, sunburst McCarty, Matchless, Jubilee, and most likely the Goldtone are never leaving the house. They're simply too valuable since they're time pieces in immaculate condition. The players are the Bogner, Fenders, LP Goldtop, 335, and green PRS. I see those ones as tools.

I've sort of decided which ones are tools and which ones are collectibles.

Just to clarify.....I play all the guitars anytime I want. When I say "player" I mean guitars that get taken to rehearsal rooms and get set on stands in a club.

I love the Black Beauty and Matchless etc., but I handle them carefully at home only.
The ones I grab to go out the door are usually the Goldtop LP, Honeyflame LP, or any of the strats.

I dunno man. There's something sort of odd to me about not making your best gear your "main" gear. I see d1's beat up Custom & to me it oozes vibe... lots of music made on that one. I also recall a quote from someone who built acoustics... one of the well-known smaller guys & he said that when one of his guitars comes back that has no signs of wear it bugs him. Thinks there's something wrong with the instrument... that it didn't get played.

About 15 years ago I remember going to 48th street & the shops all had vintage stuff... pre-CBS strats were still $6000 and Jags were $700...

It seemed to be that the guitars with the play wear ALWAYS sounded & played better then the ones that were mint. I'd like to think that someone picked those up & thought, wow this ones great. I'm gonna play it! And they did!

I totally understand not bringing stuff to the club when you've got an hour set with three other bands on the bill... but at the same time, if you've got a headline somewhere or session work... Why NOT use the stuff?

All my gear leaves the house... it gets used or it gets sold.

Hell... I've got one six-space rack with contents that are worth double that. And that's only one case of gear that goes to a gig!!!

Play it.

You know you want to...

Play it.

You know you want to...

I just spent the last couple hours playing the Black Beauty, and I really think it's easily the best Custom I've ever played. The neck and action are just ridiculously good. The Custom 5 sounds huge in an all mahogany LP Custom.

I think I may listen to you and turn that guitar into my main guitar. The other ones have a little more bite on the top end, since they're Standards, but the Custom has a tone that fills the room. I think the 2 best guitars I've ever owned are the Black Beauty and ES-335. Gibson hit grand slams with those two.

Good on ya Joe!! I see your point though, your guitars do look awesome... I would trat them a little kinder than I do. I think I told you the story of that '1992 '59 guitar made by T.Muprhy? Well I always swore that when I got another L.P they would get used and not treated with kid gloves...so I kept true to that... However on day I will get either an R7 or R9 and I won't be so hard on that!;)

Re: My Rig 08

I know I hate it. I want to go back to my first rig, circa 1983.

That's why I didn't marry a greedy gringa. I married a hot Latina who's only request is that there's no gear in the bedroom. Joe wears the pants....he makes the rules! I play nice guitars. She cooks gourmet. I planned this out perfectly! LOL

I like where this is headed. Take your best guitar, and play it. Breathe life into it at every opportunity. Let it have its life out in the big wide world. That is worth infinitely more than 4,000 x $1. Playing your best guitar and producing your best tone for the world to hear is priceless.

BTW, that's a beautiful, functional and diverse range of amplifiers. All bases covered in style.

Now let's hear some rockin' clips of all that equipment in action! It's good to share!

Cheers...................................... wahwah

Re: My Rig 08

Selllin' those McCartys?

I sure don't want to, but every once in awhile I consider cashing out of the teal black (green) one. It's a very rare colored McCarty, and it's light and resonant. What happens is I play it and decide against selling it.

I'd consider offers on it though. I'd reinstall the original pickups. The stock McCarty pickups are actually really good.

As much as I love the PRS's, I still gravitate toward the Gibbos and strats.

Re: My Rig 08

That's funny, I totaly ignore my early 70s SG because I love my McCarty, the neck is just "right". I'd like to get a McCarty with a maple top and birds though. My STD McCarty is great sounding, but a little dark with the all mahogany body and neck and rosewood fnger board. And it only has dot inlays :(
