My Rivera, Loudoness Maximus! Pics!

Thought i’d post a couple of pix of my main amp sen as ive done a few posts on my guitars.
This is a 2004 Rivera Knucklehead 6L6 100 watt Reverb head and cab.
To be honest this is one of the most versatile amps ive owned over the years, i love the variaty of music styles it covers.
Most people know all about these beasts but i’ll give a quik overview.
Clean Channel, (1) best cleans ive EVER head from a high gain head, period. If you were blind you would swear you were plugged into a fender! And turn the gain up and you enter some nice dirty blues tones...... engage the boost and your hear Vox like tones......

Crunch Channel, (2) tihs channel i use primarily for rythym from slitghy distorted tones to modded Marshall
thunder! But it cleans up VERY well when rolling the volume on the guitar down, even when the gains at 10.

They have a lot of push/pull knobs that control mid scooping, contour and brightness, alot to tweak! But when you find your sweet spots its well worth the effort!

Lead Channel, (3) even though it shares the same eq as channel 2, it is voiced completely different, this channel is best left for leads, its sound is more “cutting” to my ears than channel 2, not in a bad way though.
I love my Singlecut on the neck pup on this channel, smooth as and so much sustain, and all the gain is usable,
none of this “look how much gain my amp has on 10!”
but its sounds like fuzzy mush!
And tighter than a buss full of nun’s! No flabby bottom’ness some Mesa’s produce.

Ok the Cab, i ordered a cab loaded with Celestions, 2 V30’s on top and 2 G12 75T’s on the bottom, this is my favorite combo for the styles i play.

Anyway im just about to play around with tubes, ive changed the factory Svetlana =C=’s and put in some JJ 6L6 GC’s. And ive just ordered the new JJ 12AX7 ECC803 Longplate preamp tubes along with the GT12AX7M and
C tubes and a 12AX7EH.

It came stock with four Sovtek 12AX7 WA’s and one 12AX7 LP.

So im interested in how these new tubes will make it sound!

well thats enough from me, off to plug in!

Congrats on the new amp!

I dig most Riveras but the KHR and KH2 are a bit too oriented towards the scooped midrange tones for my taste. That said, they're amazingly versatile and solidly built.

has anyone seen Twilight Odyssey around lately?
No, I haven't. :)

That's a beautiful looking amp! Make sure to let it warm up for a bit for best sound.

Everything you said in describing your amp seems to hold true with mine, as well, tho mine is an old, pre-reverb Knucklehead.

As you can see, cosmetically, it looks quite a bit different from yours.

Here's a clip I tracked last Sunday using my Rivera ... http://streamer.soundclick.com/tweety_DL/05/06/freemp3/twilightodyssey+neoclassicalclip1.mp3

I love your description "Tighter than a bus full of nuns!" hahahaha

I got to play through one of those when I went to the LA Amp Show. Nice amp, but you're right...they should have voiced the 2nd and 3rd channels a little closer. It's an amazingly versatile amp though. I was getting some nice lush clean tones and midgain tones out of it.

I'm curious to see what you think of all the pre tubes you bought. Check out my highgain pre tube shootout in the Vault. I have a feeling the M will be too thick and a tad mushy. All amps prefer a particular tube, so it'll be interesting to see if your Rivera sounds best with the GT C, the JJ EC803S, or the EH.

Ok, i was just going to see if you use a Hotplate with yours, and low and behold you do.... this amp is louder than a ZZ Top concert and doesnt come into its "zone" unless the volume is over at least 3.5. Even at that low setting
its getting crazy for smaller gigs im miked up at.

How do you find tha hotplate with the Knucklehead, good purchase?

I'll get on to the tube swapping this weekend and post a review, looking forward to the results. Hopefully they will be pleasing!!

One of the best I've ever made. Check out the clip I linked above. That was all done with the Hot Plate in the signal chain.

Really nice, i'll pick one up this weekend if i can find one in my local area.

Re: My Rivera, Loudoness Maximus! Pics!

Make sure you get the right version, because the Hot Plates are made individually for each load. (4, 8, 16, etc)

Hotplates are bought in by South Pacific music, who supply to Music Works stores, so any of those shops should be able to get one for you. The takapuna store would probably be the best bet, as Allan tends to hold a bit more cool, boutiwque stuff than the other shops. But Ricky at the town shop will be able to get you one.
