My Seth Lover Hum's

Hello Guys + Girls, First up please be gentle with me I'm a newbie here!
I bought a pair of Seth Lover's from eBay and they came with no covers. :smack: Is attaching covers a job that a novice solderer can perform, or should I seek out a pro to do it? Do the covers make that much difference anyway? Also does anyone out there have a set in a Les Paul that they can tell me what they sound like? Cheers!

Even without covers there should be very little hum from a humbucking pickup! There are zillions of humbuckers available without the covers so I suspect you have another problem and that your HUM is not related to not having nickel covers on your pickups. Lew

Another thought: What do you think of a Cherry Sunburst L.P. with creme colored humbuckers in?

i think a cherry burst LP w/ double creme bobbins are PERFECT! ... lose the pickguard and it's the eptiome of LP aesthetics!

I think Seths will sound killer in an LP ... in fact, I'm putting a set in my Goldtop. :)

It's a '96 Classic Premium Plus, and no guard was installed because of the AWESOME edge to edge pencil thin flames under a nice cherry 'burst.

Why are you telling him to wax pot a Seth Lover? The design was made specifically without potting to achieve the sound of a vintage pickup. Potting it just ruins the whole reason as to why you get a Seth, which is for the "open" sound.

Agreed, do not alter the pickup by wax potting them. You might be getting a feedback or hum because you are running them through a super high gain amp, such as a Mesa Dual Recto or similar. They are not recommended for ultra high gain settings. I personally prefer the look of a classic sunburst les paul with nickel covers. I think that the cream rings with binding and the pickguard also look so nice and classic that I restored my guitar to look like that. If I can figure out how to upload pictures you could see for yourself.

Hey man, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!Don't worry there's no newb stigma here.

I would see if I've got a loose ground somewhere before blaming the pups, as for the cover, they're real easy to put on and solder.

Here's my Heritage with dbl. cremes...it's vintage or lightburst, but you can get a feeling for how your guitar would look.

Hey, when it comes to guitars and how they look, there is no right or wrong. All of the above are classic combinations (and where are you zebra lovers?).

Hey 'Vid, You will never guess what - My L.P. currently has a pair of Zebra SD's in it already LOL!!
It has an AP2 in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck! I'm going to get a picture of it right now to load up and show you folks :laugh2:

How would the Seth's do in a 335 style guitar? I love the sound but I'm worried about feedback. I don't use tons of gain, but I crank my twin reverb pretty good (master vol disabled). Looking for that perfect humbucker bridge crunch and bite for powerful old school vibe rock n' roll stuff. Right now my 335 clone has stock Epi pickups. I like the neck pickup just fine, it's very decent, but the bridge pickup sounds shrill on the highs and anemic on the crunch. I'm considering changing that pup and upgrading the vol and tone pots and cap for the bridge p/u. I just can't ever leave a guitar alone, always have to be F'ing with it LOL.

I have a friend with a Seth in a big Jazz box guitar, but he plays low volume blues, feedback is not an issue.

They'll make it sound like a '58 ES-335. Personally, I think the worries about squeeling are mostly theoretical without all that much basis in actual fact. Just don't stand facing your amp at extremely high volumes and you'll probably be fine. All of the great Gibson Les Pauls and ES-335 guitars from the 50's and 60's had unpotted pickups. Lew
