My Son Gets A Custom Tele

My father in law gave me some lumber.

I made a deal with a local builder to do some work in exchange for a couple of guitars. Here's the first...it's a tele made from american black walnut. It has a maple neck with 9 1/2" radius and a set of Fender original vintage tele pickups in it. Standrd three way switch.
My kid has always wanted a tele somewhere in the neighborhood of surf green, so Tony made the body out of scraps, essentially. It's 4 pieces and they're kinda ugly in person, so the world isn't losing a great piece of figured wood by painting it. We had Tony build the guitar, but leave it bare. My son and I will take it apart and do the finish work ourselves. First up...grain filler.
Anyway, here are a couple quick shots from last night. I'll do some better ones shortly.

As for the guitar...it's damn good. I'd take it over the last american standard I tried out. The Fender vintage pups sound just like a tele should sound. The range of tones is quite impressive from jazzy to twangy to all out RAWK. Easily a guitar you could do a whole set with. I'd definitely recommend Tony to anybody looking for a T. He doesn't charge a fortune to do it, either.

We'll do pics of the finish process if anyone is interested.

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

I love it! Personnaly, I would just leave it as is... I really like that natural look but I totally get that folks like some color!

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

what color you goin for? Surf green? Please say surf green.
Anyways, very nice. I also am a fan of the fender OV tele pickups.

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

I didn't make the body...Tony did. He can. My custom is quite different.

New pics. The boy is disassembling it now to start sanding.

Nice! I'd be tempted to do an oil finish, but, surf green will look great, I'm sure! And, I do dig the neck joint!

Did he build the neck, too?

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

He does build necks, however all his have an applied fretboard. The kid wanted the traditional one piece tele neck, so this one came from Mighty Mite with frets and all. It seems like a fine neck. Good medium C cut with a 9 1/2" radius. This one only has a sanding sealer on it. We will hit it with a coat or two of satin Deft.

Oh, and for the finish, it's paint. I viewed this project more as a custom tele for my son than a walnut guitar. I wanted him to have his dream tele and that was green. The walnut was a byproduct almost.

Now, the guitar that I'm having Tony do for me, it'll use the premium boards with the nice curvy grain.

Looks great, man. It looks tiny in those pics, though. Is it built to a smaller scale or is your son actually Paul Bunyan?

Yeah, that walnut body is begging for an oil finish. Whatever you do, don't cover up that nice grain! A semi-transparent green stain would look really nice on that.

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

It's regular size, though a bit thinner than standard, to keep weight down. That walnut is heavy stuff.

The kid is about 6' 1". He's pretty long.

Here's a pic with a coat of shellac for a sealer coat.

Don't worry about the wood. There's a big ass pile of it and not all of it beautiful. Tony has already done several teles and steels with this wood...in natural finishes.

The custom he's doing for me will be a natural finish walnut and paduak number.
But THIS one is gonna be green.

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

Very nice. But the best part is that you're doing a project with your son. He'll remember that long past the life of the Tele. Great project.

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

No offense, but I like how you refer to him as the "the kid". XD My dad does the same thing lol.

EDIT: Oh and the tele looks great too!!

Re: My Son Gets A Custom Tele

I refer to him as the kid because I don't want to post his name.

Second coat of shellac applied. Now we wait.

For all those fretting about the paint, here's one for you. This was a big pile of walnut. Tony has already done several nice ones with clear finsihes.

Here's one in progress. A walnut thinline with paduak top.
