my sounds really changing lately...

and I like how it's changing. When I first started playing I was all about high output humbuckers and heavy gain. Lately I've been digging a lower gain, crunchy sound. I've been using the GFS Li'l puncher in my tele split more than full on lately...I prefer the full humbucker for leads, but for rythm, chord work, and pretty much anything else I'm digging the punch of the single coil. As of now I don't have the cash to change stuff around, but the next guitars I get I'm leaning towards getting a tele with 2 singles, or a P-90 guitar, because they have a tone I like that you just can't get with humbuckers. Most of you probably don't care, but just something I thought I'd share.

I'm always floored when I learn that someone with a thick, cutting rhythm tone is using P90's or some other single-coil.

Let us know what you end up getting.

isn't it crazy how thick and punchy some single coils can be? I am really digging them, it's all about putting the pickups in the right guitar and setting the amp up right.

Re: my sounds really changing lately...

i've heard this story about a million times :smokin:

the heaviest tones ever recorded came from single coils. just get a phat cat for the neck of that tele in your avatar man.

Re: my sounds really changing lately...

Since I put in triple shots, I've been running the neck pup on my LP split most of the time. I'm appreciating the clearer tone more.

Re: my sounds really changing lately...

I know how it goes. I got two Humbuckers for my baby (an 04 strat, MIM) with splits for both of them. Despite loving the Humbuckers, I tend to use the Neck split coil a good bit as well. In my jazz group I use the A2P neck exclusively. I use the neck split for the comping and voicings to add clarity to the mix, but when I gotta solo I switch up to the full Humbucker. But yeah, It's really nice to have access to those tones, cause they really come in handy.

i know what you mean, i've gone from a duncan distortion on full gain to a 59 just under half gain and i love it. i love the p-90s in my gibson lp speacial, but imo you can't beat a crunchy paf in a semi hollow.

yea you can, if you've got a crunchy paf(PG in my case) in the bridge of a semi and a p-90 in the neck;)

Re: my sounds really changing lately...

I did a little experiment with my Gretsch BST this morning...it had a bigmouth in the bridge, and a dream 90 in the neck, so I switched them around! The Dream 90 in the bridge is pretty cool, a little weak cause it's a neck model, but I wanted to see if a bridge P-90 was what that axe needed, and it definitely is. So sometime I will get a bucker sized P-90 for the bridge, and put the neck dream 90 back in the neck.

Re: my sounds really changing lately...

A Phat Cat paired with a hot Tele bridge single coil is the way to go for all-around versatility. Does the cleans beautifully and has TONS of roar and crunch when you kick in the gain.

It's actually really nice to have a Tele with a regular Tele s/c in the bridge and another with a Phat Cat in a HB routed Tele bridge.
