My ugly amp!!

A few of those mid-60's Gibsons (Saturn 45RVT, Apollo) have twin-T filters in the tone stack, which give them a pretty weird response. They sound a lot better if you pull a lot of those parts...the 6EU7 tubes are getting to be a problem too (scarce and very $$$).

All of them are a bit different and a bit over-thought. The big issue with both my Atlas and Merc were these big .047 600V caps across the powertube sockets, to keep the gain down. They didn't want no tubes snarling back in the early 60s. Just removing those big caps was a huge step in the right direction, both volume and gain back in play. The I just tweaked from there. I personally love the 6EU7 just because it has a different voice than the 12AX7 that is in so many amps. It is a different mid snarl that I love about all of mine I don't mind chasing down some old tubes to fit the bill.

Re: My ugly amp!!

I have one of those Saturns and it makes me wonder if anybody actually listened to it after they designed it...pulled all the filter parts and it sounds reasonable now. I didn't have as much of a problem with an Apollo (I think that was the model; big 6L6 quad, 2x12"). A slightly less bright version of a Twin Reverb...

My guess is that it was all about being clean, tone did not matter, clean was THE tone. If those amps sounded as good stock as they do after they are messed with a bit, they would be fetching major cash. Very few of them left.

Do you have any pics? I would love to see them.

Yep. It's ugly.

In a really nice sort of way. I'd say it's just about perfect, especially with the V propped up against it.

I think it kinda makes perfect sense too.

Re: My ugly amp!!

The Saturn is out with a harp player friend (it's pretty good for that; 2x10" and loud, big midrange tone). The Apollo ended up with a guy who was fronting Canned Heat and I think he played slide through it.

That's such a cool rig! I like the reverse zebras on the V too.

Thanks man,

When I had the pickups made, I wanted them reversed. I think my friends Musicman EVH has that and I thought it was cool.
