N.G.D. Sold My P-90 Special & Got Something A Lil Different.....

This was my 2015 Double Cut L.P. P-90 Special, it was a beautiful guitar but it just didn't get the attention that it deserved. After dealing with my seemingly endless journey for a new amp that I could live with & spending a small fortune on Xmas I decided to sell it. The idea was to get my money back on the Special & fund something that I'd play a bit more, perhaps making a few bucks in the process?

I knew this time I didn't want to spend too much on the logo. I don't have anything against them, actually I absolutely love Gibson's and I own several of them but without a doubt these days a lot of what you are paying for is on the headstock? That said, the headstock is also why they hold their value so well & why they are so easy to move on the used market?

Anyway, the Special had been case candy for the past few months, only coming out to play periodically so I put it up on Reverb to see what would happen. After about a week of getting lowball offers someone paid my asking price which was actually about $75 more than I spent on it plus I'd tagged on a extra $39 for shipping!!!

Originally I wanted to try one of Fender's new 3/4 scale Duo Sonics or Mustangs! They are selling for about $500 new & that would have left me with almost $300 profit from the Gibson but while I was checking them out an opportunity arose!!!

A buddy of mine's wife had bought him a brand new Reverend Buckshot for Christmas from a local music store but there was a slight problem, he only plays dropped tuned chugga-chugga stuff!!! Giving him a guitar like this is akin to giving Brad Paisley a 8 String Ibanez! He can play it, he can even play it pretty well, but at the end of the day there's just TONS of better choices!!!

She doesn't know anything about guitars and the D-bag owner of the store just got a big Reverend shipment in which he then pushed on her like a bad of Crack! "It's a super versatile guitar and it's great for every style of music" he says!!! Sorta true I guess, as long as you don't play a lot of dropped tuned chugga-chugga stuff? LOL!!!

Anyway, after explaining the predicament to his wife we took a trip back to the store to see if he could get a refund or at the very least put the almost $800 she had spent toward something more befitting his personality. No such luck, the owner (we'll just call him D-bag) wouldn't give him anything over trade in value for it (about $400) because his wife bought it more than a month before Xmas. It didn't matter that she had no idea what she was doing, or that it never even left the case until he opened it on the 25th & all the tags were still on it, there was just no reasoning with the guy...

Eventually my friend told him where he could put his $400 & we left. On the way home he asked if I'd post it on Reverb for him, he didn't even care if $400 was all he got as long as it wasn't that guy who got the deal!!! I told him that I would list it for $650 & see what happens but he asked that I drop it down to $550 in an effort to make it move faster. When he said that I explained that after shipping and fees he would only end up with about $500 but he said that he was alright with that as long as it didn't take long.

So I really like the guitar and the wheels started turning in my head! I told him that if he was absolutely sure that he'd be alright with only $500 for the thing I'd just take it! It would save the me the hassle of having to post it for him & save him the hassle & expense of shipping it! Plus this way he would get his money right away and he could start looking for something different?

So that's what we did & now I've got a brand new Reverend Buckshot!!! I couldn't be more happy with the guitar and best of all I ended up with about $250 extra from the sale of my Gibson which has since been put to good use, battling the mountain of debt I made this Christmas!!!!

Great deal - Revs are GREAT guitars even at full asking price, so this is even more of a steal! Well done.

I like Reverend guitars, although I've never owned one. They look like the product of a trip through the Fender, Gibson, and Gretsch factory, where you build a guitar from whatever you grab along the way.

I'll never understand music store salesmen who can't guide an inexperienced buyer toward the right gear. IMO, they don't know how to do their job.

3/4 scale Duo Sonics or Mustangs!

24" scale to be fair, not 3/4 ... The new Duos/Mustangs are great, if I was in the market I'd grab one right away, quality-feeling guitars.

Reverend is cool too, but they don't market well to me... Congrats :)

That is very special looking guitar, kinda startling at first glance but then it all comes together an you can see the beauty. Uh, what the heck is the pickup in the neck position?

The neck is a Revtron, based on Filtertron, but designed/specced in house by Joe Naylor.

Yeah, guys like this store owner don't know how to run a business. He made a sale, but lost a customer...just the opposite of what a good business owner wants to do. And sometimes just doing the right (ethical) thing is also doing the best thing for the store. My local store made a "customer" out of me when they gave me great deals on small items and service. And they have always treated me more like a friend rather than a potential sale. I have since purchased four expensive guitars and other stuff from him.

That P-90 Special sure looks like a beautiful guitar. Too bad you had to sell it.

It was a beautiful guitar & I'd be lying if I said that I won't, & haven't, missed it tremendously! Unfortunately it just didn't get played very much? I found that I had to remind myself periodically to take it out & play it & at the end of the day I'm going to use the Reverend more.

Especially since my father in law has kidnapped my beautiful Telecaster yet again!!!

Every time I take the thing back he gets all passive aggressive and bi+<hy & I give it back to him... "You sure got a lot of nice guitars to play, but you know you can only play one at a time right?" & "Oh boy, I sure do love the sound of that Telly you have, have you been using it much?"

Do you want the guitar back Roger.... LOL!!!
