n my case should i buy single pedals or multi effects?

Hi, i am thinking of buying a boss me50 multi effects pedal but after reading some things i am wondering if i should now buy individual stop boxes instead. The main effect i use is delay but a noise supressor wold also be ideal. I hear the me50 does both of those things quite nicely?

i can't afford brand new individual pedals unless there are some fair priced excellent pedals i don't know about?

please advise. thanks

I'm a stompbox guy, rather than rack guy, but here's my attitude about FX....

For things like wah, od, dist, envelope, I think it's best to buy individual analog pedals.

For modulation and delay FX, sometimes it's cheaper and more convenient to use multiFX pedals like L6, Yamaha, Boss etc.

I find that having the green and blue Line 6's is great, because it's not limiting. If I'm looking for a cool sound, I can turn the rotary till I find something. On top of that, I like some of the spacey things I can find by combining the 2 pedals. I'm also able to bring those 2 pedals in/out of the loop with a loop box. Then, it's 1 button to turn both on simultaneously.

I'd go for the individual stompboxes. You'd be surprised at how affordable quality pedals are these days. Make sure that you buy them used though.

+1 to what Gearjoneser said about the DL4.

Re: n my case should i buy single pedals or multi effects?

I've had my Boss ME-50 for over 2 yrs now- no problems and I find it very useful in live situations.
It's not the greatest unit out there, but for the money it suits me fine.
I only use a few programs, just for certain songs that call for it.
Most of the time I just use it as a collection of stompboxes, tuner, NS, wah/vol. all in one small package. I use the tube screamer setting most of the time, it works great, and I have added the optional footswitch so I can use the tone modify and compressor on the fly, and to change banks in the programed stuff.
Considering the small stages we usually end up with, and that I use it only for live playing it's the greatest unit I've had.
Remember, most of the audience won't know/care if you are using the best individual effects units or an all in one unit. Most don't even know when you have chorus on!

stomp boxes.... i use some multiFX's at home but for a live playing rig i really prefer a simple fx box that is easy to use...... for gigging sometimes less tech is best....

Re: n my case should i buy single pedals or multi effects?

i will be using whatever i buy for home use only. i won't be gigging for a few years yet! i am not a begginer though

i'm not an electronics expert or anything, but i'm very confident when i say that nothing beats analog effects through a tube amp. all those digitally processed effects to me just don't cut it. take a metal muff and plug it into any tube amp and you're going to get some great tone that i don't think any multi-effects pedal will produce. although i think the gt-8 is superior and boss does seem to come up with top quality stuff. even in their new digital line of pedals.

You can get heaps of second hand boss pedals cheap and they should be as good if not better then their modelled version on the ME-50. I like individual pedals more because they are generally easier to use, more controllable and sound better then something with every effect in it for the price (as in sometimes things like $3000 multi fx racks are better then $40 stompboxs)

I use a Boss ME-50 at church, where (ironically) I need lots of different sounds. It has noise suppressor and delay, and yes, it does them nicely: you'll get essentially all the delays Boss has with this. You get reverse, tap, space, analog, various timings, and even a repeater for small (1second iirc) repeats.

Then you get more tone modulators (chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo) than you can shake a stick at, and more distortions than you'll probably ever need. If you add two single foot switches (or the Boss FS-6 dual, like I did) you get the ability to go up/down in memory bank (or in manual mode you can turn tone modify and compressor on and off).

My "pedal board" right now is the ME-50 (BD-2 blues driver, chorus, and tap delay set up in manual mode, or "Crunch"/"Tremolo+Overdrive"/"Lead" in memory bank one), the dual foot switch add-on to it (semi-hollow simulator and compressor lead/boost config), then my '72 twin reverb's foot switch (tremolo and spring reverb).

The Boss ME-50 isn't the best at everything, but it works great for what I need, and is easy to understand, much more than most multi boards. Also much easier to edit the patches (just press edit and move knobs). I love the knobs, and I hate amp modelling (since I have a nice amp) so for me it's awesome.

Can you describe more about your setup? By the way, if you only have a keyboard amp or other non-guitar amp, you can run the ME-50 line out to it. It simulates an amp on the Line Out, meaning headphone play, and even keyboard amps, sound good that way.

Re: n my case should i buy single pedals or multi effects?

they make an me-20 now and it has all the effects you need without the amp modeling. it's pretty cheap so maybe you might want to check that out
