I refuse to have to download and go through the mess of plugging my Katana into my laptop. Tried once and gave up. So I just don't use it anymore lol. Went back to a single channel tube amp that I don't have to futz with. I hate updates and all that mess. Yes, I am a dinosaur.

You don;t need a laptop to use the Katana. Just use the knobs on top. Its easy as pie to dial in

You can get great sounds without the editor, for sure. But there are a ton more parameters to tweak in the editor.

For me for high gain tones (80s style) I would consider this amp unusable without the app.
Even aside from that, the depth of control via the app is not even close to what you get on the amp's interface.
eg for setting specific OD pedals, chorus and delay parameters, what the footswitch does etc etc

I'll add that if you need any kind of deep effects editing, or even not-so-deep effects editing, you would need the app.
