NAD Incoming (Elmwood)

In my quest to find a superb sounding low wattage amp, I was lucky enough to stumble upon an Elmwood Stinger 30 head. Elmwood amps are incredible and it's pitiful that they are not more common here in the U.S. Indeed they are very pricey, but it is the unwillingness of U.S. dealers to negotiate deals on Elmwood amps that make them hard to obtain. I called every U.S. Elmwood dealer (except the one I bought from) and none of them were willing to go below MSRP.

In any case, my head is on its way and I cannot wait for it it arrive. The last time I played and Elmwood amp was probably over a year ago when I got to play the crap out of a Modena 90 and Bonneville 50. I was sick in love with both amps, but my buddy would not dare part with them.

As much as I absolutely crave the Bonneville and Modena, they are very loud and powerful amps. They have awesome master volumes and can do well at low volumes, but I want that pushed tube sound without cracking the foundation of my house. Enter the Stinger 30 which is equipped with 4 EL84 power tubes and a feature that allows the amp to run at pentode (30w) or triode (15w). It has 2 channels, clean and drive. Not jam packed with features, but plenty of versatility. From what I hear, it has mega clean headroom if you want it, even if the volume is cranked. My friend also says it's full sounding and easily mixes it up in a fair sized gig.

Since I have not actually played a Stinger 30 my self, this is rather a leap of faith. I'm only going on my impression of Elmwood overall based on my experience with the M90 and Bonneville, audio demos, video from Youtube, and what my pal says about it. Considering that it cost me less than $1400, I'm 99% certain that I will be satisfied.

I'll post an update soon. Go check out some Elmwoods. They came out with a Modena 20 not too long ago. I have no idea what the price is, but hopefully it's a lot more affordable than the M90. It's a 20w, 2 channel amp, but loaded with KT66's. There's only one audio demo, but from the way it sounds, it's got some of that Marshall Vintage Modern kind of crunch and thickness.

Knock yourself out. 20 watts would never be enough for me. I find the Blackface Bassman perfect- 40 watts, for that Marshall style distortion 20 - 30 watts is good too, in a very bright amp like Fenders; the Deluxe Reverb is perfect of course, but youve got that very bright clean on the edge of sweet breakup. My philosophy is at least 30, preferably 40-50watts foor MKarshall, 25 minimum watts for Fender, preferable 35-40. I just hate to be that way to you, but unless its strictly for recording, I think its a mistake , even cranked to ten with Red Fangs( a very efficient speaker)

cant wait to hear it! Id LOVE to find the perfect lower volume cranked tone! Seems like most smaller amps run the EL84s and end up sounding wooly to my ears. (granted my ears are VERY bad) but just my .02

It's 30w, but a pentode/triode selector which allows it to also run at 16w.

I know what you mean, but I recently picked up a Friedman Pink Taco and it sounds incredible. It's not wooly. In fact, no one could probably tell the difference between it and a 50w plexi from a recording. I have never played a Stinger so this is kind of a leap of faith. However, from what my Elmwood buddy says, it's as close to perfect as any EL84 could get - thick midrange, ample low end, bright controls on every channel for a very Voxy chime. Day after tomorrow... anticipatory anxiety has set in.

The size of that amp reminds me of the old Peavey PA amps lol. I know it's nothing like it though. I like that look.

It can sit upright or flat so it should be comfortable on top of another amp or on a computer desk. Also, it's a 19" rackmount head so all you have to do is pop it out of the case and attach the rackmount brackets.

Interesting. Wonder if the fan only comes on when hot or all the time.

It would appear you're heading pretty far into left field/obscure territory at this point in your search (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I don't know how obscure it is, but I was aiming for an M60 so if this doesn't work out, that's what I'll be after.
