NAD: Kemper Profiling Amp (w/clips!)

Re: NAD: Kemper Profiling Amp (w/clips!)

I'm waiting on some parts to build a new mic preamp so I have something worthy of profiling with before hitting up friends. In the immediate vicinity I have a JSX, 5150, JVM410H, and Dual Rectifier that I'll be profiling.

In the meantime, www.TheAmpFactory.com just released a new pack yesterday - the 6505 in it is INSANELY accurate.

Looking forward to seeing those on the Kemper site.

You're killing me here. :D The bundles all have about half a dozen amps that I'd want, and then a dozen that I don't want.

If they turn out really well I'll probably share them in a more private context than the site, but you'll definitely get them!

I know what you mean about TAF bundles... some are great and some are just "I never wanted to play that amp in real life, either." I've been buying singles and have come across some great ones, but my favorites so far are the new 6505, SLO100, and Badcat models.

I reamped my old Rose of Sharyn DI's with the new 6505 profile yesterday; turned out really, really well. I'm definitely going to be putting EMGs back into my Stinnett after hearing this:

Re: NAD: Kemper Profiling Amp (w/clips!)

Question - can the kemper profile an amp with a pedal in front of it? one of my favorite tones is a jcm800 with a super OD in front of it. can it profile that, or would it just be the amp by itself?

thx

Re: NAD: Kemper Profiling Amp (w/clips!)

It can profile any chain you want; you just plug the Kemper out into where you'd plug your guitar in the signal chain. I still need to do a test of profiled TS + amp vs TS into kemper + profiled amp, but I have no problem with the profiles I have that were done with a TS infront of the amp.

wild. thanks!

Re: NAD: Kemper Profiling Amp (w/clips!)

When you profile a 3 channel amp, do you only capture one channel?

You can think of a profile as a 'snapshot' of the given setup - if you want all three channels, you need to do three different profiles. There are gain/eq controls on each profile, so there is some tweakability, but your best bet is to use three distinct profiles.

Here's another clip, I reamped these guitars for a friend.

Ok, I thought so. But it is limited in that the KPA can only "clone" what gets put into it, and then the KPA can only tweak the profile using it's B,M,T eq and presence dial right?
It won't have all the options of the amp itself like Fat switches (JSX), bold/spongy (MESA), deep buttons (ENGL), modern/vintage voicing switches, shift, edge buttons (VHT) etc. You would have to create seperate profiles with all those options in use, and not in use then correct?

I just hear of players getting rid of their amps after profiling them and I don't think I could do that. Mainly because I'm always evolving and my needs change based on pickups, speakers, playing style and even the room/location. So as a result, those little features really help my tone out sometimes.

Re: NAD: Kemper Profiling Amp (w/clips!)

I think a lot of people are confused by what profiling really means, because so much attention is paid to cloning the feel and response of amps.

..which is great and all..

But what you're really doing - and to me, what makes the KPA and even more mind-bogglingly valuable tool in the studio - is cloning a signal path.

That means everything is retained. You can capture endless performances under the most ideal conditions... something happens and you need to add more guitars to a year-old session? No problem if you profiled it. Pull it up on the KPA and it's like you went back in time.

That's what it is.

The KPA is a time machine for tone.

Or.. anything.

I wonder if it would work just as well for vocal pres and other things.....

Yeah, you've hit the nail on the head with that assessment. As a live player I like the idea of the KPA and it would be a more than valuable tool for that, but it really shines as someone who really only plays/writes in a studio setting. I can set up incredible rigs at huge volumes, clone them, and then record via SPDIF anywhere I want with zero signal degradation from bad converters. The tones I record and reamp with I just save as new patches; instant recall of an entire guitar tone. It's insane.

I don't think it would work for anything but guitar/bass rigs, unfortunately, at least in the current setup. The technology could very well be implemented to clone preamps and eq, but dynamics like compression aren't profile-able, even in a guitar/bass rig.
