NAD: new attenuator day

I'm an idiot for selling the weber load dump I used to have. It went great with my night train when I had it. Well, got another attenuator, finally!

25W Weber load dump. Switchable impedance, and switchable treble boost, and a rheostat knob, not just a -X dB switch as the ebay stuff out there. $70 shipped. The sound quality is good. A little loss of presence when attenuating a lot of signal, but the 3 dB treble boost is included for that reason. +6 dB is overboard IMO.

Time to go cook my 6V6s. I may have to go get some 6L6s to try, too.

What's also nice is that this thing'll serve me well with any low wattage amp I may use in the future, and I predict that if I replace the tweaker any time, it'd probably be with a Deluxe Reverb of some sort (a reissue or clone, or a Supersonic 22).

If you use it with anything that puts out more than 20W, I'd recommend you get a bigger unit.

weber says that for simply turning it up to the point of breakup and then dropping it a few dB, a 25W attenuator is definitely ok for a 22 amp. Its when you have something like a 50W marshall that is probably putting out 50W by the time you hit 5 in the master, and then 65W+ by the time you get to 10, thats when it's absolutely essential to get a attenuator that is rated higher than the amp's wattage. That's pretty much how weber explains it.

If you'd spent 20 dollars more, you could have gotten a MiniMASS, which, to my ear, sounds lightyears better.

Because lightyears are the unit of measure for things sounding better than other things.

I dunno, this one seems to color my tone less than my old one... The last one sounded noticeably darker and fizzier, this one has a much smoother rheostat knob and I haven't felt the need to engage the treble boost at all.
well, if I hock this thing on ebay sometime, it seems I'll get close to what I paid. When everyone's selling volume boxes and no-name attenuators made in their basement, it seems Weber stuff still gets snatched up pretty quick.
