NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Here's an amp I picked up a few weeks ago. It's a Peters Dual Professional. Peters amps are handmade in Canada by James Peters. You can read about them here:
http://petersamplification.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Basically, Peters makes dual or triple channel amps (or a dual preamp), and you get to choose what preamp/channels you want from his 7 or 8 selections.

This amp has the Vega channel, which is a hot-rodded Marshall sound, and the Gryphon, which is a higher gain channel, with lower mids, almost like a Mesa Rectifier voice, but with a tighter attack.
Both channels feature crunch and edge switches that shape the tone/feel.
The amp also has presence, depth and damping knobs, and vintage/modern and wide/normal switches on back, which shape the tone/feel of the output section.
To finish off the features, it has an effects loop, slave out, bias points and adjustment on the back, and a footswitchable dual master volume.

You might think that this amp would be difficult to dial in with all the options, or that you could make it sound bad and have a hard time finding great sounds. Not the case. This is nothing like a Mesa Mark series. That amp has it's voice, the switches/knob are just mild tweaks that give it more gain, more bite, more balls. It never sounds bad. It sounds really good at bedroom volumes (I know, 4 KT88s!) and just gets better from there.

I'd put this amp up against any hi-gainer I've had, including Friedman, Orange, Fryette, Bogner, Mesa, Marshall...any of them. It feels and sounds great.

Here's a video:

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

I'm always thrilled to learn about cool canadian builders. Looks like an awesome amp!

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

ive played a few peters amps a while ago but they were small 20w and under. great high gain tone from a little amp though

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Had a look at his site. Looks like pretty darn cool amps. Not cheap by any means but very reasonable considering what you get.

Congrats on your amp and please report back in a while as to how you like it after a while!

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

The first time I saw Peters amps was in the early 90's when Jimmy Page started using them instead of old Marshalls.

Do you still have your Friedman Cantrell model?

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

What type/brand of valves are you using. They look like Gold Lion , are they KT77's ?

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Hey everyone, thanks for the nice comments. It is a killer, hi-gain amp. I've had a lot of amps, haven't had anything quite like it.

Page played Peters amps? I never heard that before. Cool.

I don't have the JJ anymore. Love the dirty channel on that amp. I moved it when I needed the $. I can have 3 great amps for what that thing costs. Right now I have 4. :) 77 JMP 2204 (awesome!), Peters, Mesa Rectoverb 25 combo and a Fargen Townhouse 5 watter that is super fun to play. Speaking of the Mesa, I made a video playing the same riffs, using the same guitar and cab. Check it out:

The tubes in the Peters are Gold Lion KT88s. 4 KT88s are brutally loud. But the amp sounds good at whisper volumes, too. Great great amp.

I use an amp that runs a pair of GL KT88's [NOS]. It 's massively loud and clean.
That would be fantastic with a pair of 4 x 12's.

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Agreed. I haven't tried it with my 4x12 yet, but I bet it's gonna rock.

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

I think I was mistaken about Page using Peters amps. I believe it was Petersburg amps.

I understand about cashing out of the Friedman JJ. There's a lot of amps out there that sound great that aren't over $4000. I'll probably never sell my 95 Ecstasy, and I also love my 86 Marshall 2204 w/Barber LTD as a boost.

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Nice amp! I have wanted a Gryphon for several years now, but never been in a place to actually afford one. I will check out your video later, but I can imagine it sounds amazing!

For those who don't know James Peters, I highly recommend you look into his stuff. He is a hell of a nice guy too!

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

James builds some sweet amps. I owned one of his very early amps and held on to it until it became clear that I wasn't going back to tubes from my digital toys.

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Weeeelllll. I just looked at how much $ I spent on gear this month, and now something has to go. I'm going to flip the Peters.
Here's a link to the CL ad for anyone intersted:

I'll post it in the trading post later. Figured I'd give anyone who was into this thread first shot at it. Price in the ad + sh/pp.

Re: NAD: Peters Dual Professional w Video

Very nice!

James lives just 15 minutes from me. He's a cool dude with tonnes of knowledge and amp building skills.
