NAD Randall Thrasher

Super Efffin crunchy. Great High Gian Low Gain frequency control that lets you pull out some of the low end mud that you get from low tunings. Also. it has this massive transformer that allows for EL34's, KT88/6550's, and 6L6's. Not only that, you can also use 2 different tube types at once. It has inner/outer bias pots and inserts for the prongs on a multimeter. As soon as I get some bread together, I'm going to do some tube rolling in the pre. I've already got JJ KT88/6L6 combo in the power section. Sounds great. The 5153 rocks too, in case you're wondering.

Gratz and HNAD!

I love the **** out of my Diavlo 45. The new Randall line up is awesome.

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

I had a Diavlo 100 but unfortunately I had to return it. So I just decided to wait for this to come out.
I actually would like another RD series amp. They sound amazing.

I have a bit of a love/hate thing with Randalls. I love the way other people sound through them and hate that I have such a hard time getting a great tone out of them. Maybe this new series deserves a look. Thanks for the review.

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

Where does the the RD series stand tonally? Is it 5150ish, more modded Marshall, or a sort of Recto type tone?

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

Wow. I don't know how to answer that. My first reaction is to say none of the above, but if I had to choose, I would say Marshall. But I think a 5150 sounds like a modded Marshall, so I'd be saying it sounds like a 5150, but it doesn't. The RD's have a unique tone. Very crunchy and bright, but not slice your eardrums to shreds bright; a very in your face top end presence. The low end stays together with lots of gain, unlike any stock Marshall I've ever heard or played.

Hmmm...a hum on all channels? Just with boost engaged? Mine has a bit of a hum too. Mostly with the boost engaged though. Ive changes preamp tubes and made sure its biased properly. Mine could very well be the amp functioning properly but im always wondering.

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

Yes, on all channels, but even without my guitar (or cable) plugged in. There was definitely an issue that justified a return.

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

Hows the feel on the Thrasher? To me to rd100 is fairly tight with not much of a sag feel. It also doesn't have as much gain as say a 5153. The 5153 also has a sag feel to me. How would you compare the Thrashers feel compared to the 5153?

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

The thrasher is based off of the Fortin Natas, which is known to be a surgically tight amp, so I'm guessing there's not a whole lot of sag.

The Thrasher has more note separation than the EVH, and I agree, the EVH is a gain monster. I have the EVH's gain 10 o'clock, where it's near maxed out with the Thrasher, depending on the pickups. The EVH is very smooth. Aside from the smooth overdrive of the EVH, the EVH is a pretty tight effing amp. The Randalls have a sticky feeling to the pick attack, and the EVHs have a more forgiving nature to them.

Re: NAD Randall Thrasher

The Thrasher has a very unique tone to it. It is super tight and articulate due to the high/low frequency gain knobs.
