NAD! The Soviets made quite an amp.

So, Lew set up a trade between his buddy AJ and I. Just got it yesterday, and I've been fiddling with it constantly. It is better than the last rendition of this amp, by quite a bit. It's been gone through by Bruce at Mission Amps, and he's even added an effects loop, which I have already used with a rack reverb/delay I forgot I had. One thing I did need to do was replace a pilot lamp. I wired in an LED, so it will likely never burn out as long as I have it.

Bruce has done a couple of tweaks to it to make it better than the original design, including the effects loop, and a B+ dropping resistor. I'll have to check with him for sure, but I'm suspecting it's too drop B+ a bit too ease the strain on the tubes. The one I had before was a bit high on the plate voltage as well. The preamp tubes are super awesome as well. A 12az7 in V1, which is about 70 on the gain scale, and 2 12ax7's in V2 and V3. 6L6WXT's for the power section as well. I have been looking around for schematics since my first one, but they don't quite match up. I'm sure the components vary a bit between versions. Anyway, I'm liking it a lot with my Marshall 410. Thanks again Lew!

Re: NAD! The Soviets made quite an amp.

Thank you Trevorus. I think Bruce lowered the plate voltages on the preamp tubes to make the amp "give it up" a little easier. To soften the attack so that AJ could shape the tone a little easier with his picking attack. Something like that anyway. I know just enough about guitar amp electronics to get myself into trouble trying to explain things (lol!) but that's about all.

Re: NAD! The Soviets made quite an amp.

When AJ was cleaning this head up, we discovered a great way and safe way to clean the sticky residue from old tape off of the covering material. Orange hand cleaner!

You know, the stuff you might already have in your garage to clean your hands after changing your oil or working on your engine.

It's safe for your hands and seems to be safe for the plastic or Tolex covering on your amp. At least it cleaned up this old Sovtek very nicely.

I'd try it on the bottem of the cab first, just to be sure. But we had no trouble getting the sticky gunk left over from AJ mounting his effects module on top of the amp.

I played one of those a long time ago in a music store. Bright as hell.

Not this one. Bruce (and I) modded it to get closer to the tones I like. It's much richer sounding than a stock MIG50.

Back when I got my Mig100 I looked all over the internet for schematics with no luck what so ever. The guy I got it from sold her cheap and I thought I could fix it myself, as I'm pretty handy with working on stuff. But there was so much stuff either missing or the ends of the wires were just kind of hanging out in there and with no schematic, I decided to bite the bullet and take it to Tri-piont audio and have him rebuild it. Rock solid amps. Big win sir.

My old one was a bit bright. I am amazed how THICK this thing sounds! If only I had a 215 stack, I could do doom really easily.

Perhaps the most profoundly erotic thing Frank Lee has read on here in days, if not weeks.

Thank you.
