NAD: Vox Content

So my Vox AC30 showed up today. It's in pretty good condition but I'm guessing it was probably gigged. The amp sounds good, but I'm going to have to EQ it against my 65 Twin before I can really tell if it is the contrast I need. So far I'm really digging the authentic class A sound though.

This thing is built like a tank! It's easily the heaviest combo I own.

Re: NAD: Vox Content

That is a nice looking amp. I've been debating whether or not to get a Vox sometime in the near future.

Re: NAD: Vox Content

it just goes to show that amp class isn't everything.
that's a great amp you got there man, enjoy!

Re: NAD: Vox Content

I'd say a Vox AC30 is a class A amp. Just because that's what grade I'd give it if it were in class.

Re: NAD: Vox Content

Who cares. The Vox AC30 has been used by legends for 50 years, and still defines the EL84 amp sound. If you like the Vox sound, who cares if the amp is class Z and full of porridge ? Be impressed by what comes out of the speakers and into your ears, not what spec sheets and internet chatter say. Would you suddenly dislike your guitar if you discovered the pickups used plain enamel wire instead of Formovar ?

The only true class A amps are those that have only one power tube, and many of them don't sound great or special. None of it matters, it's all about what we hear.

Re: NAD: Vox Content

So I was sick for most of the week and never got a chance to EQ the Vox against my '65 Twin. Today I finally got to crank the Vox and EQ it into the mix... AND WOW!!! The sound of this setup is HUUUUGE! I maintain crystal clear highs for single note lines and get a decent amount of grit when I throw some germanium overdrive in there.

The Vox may have made the Bassman a thing of the past.

p.s. I have no idea why everyone doesn't run a stereo rig.

Re: NAD: Vox Content

And that's a great stereo setup to run. The only problem is when you run into ground gremlins that cause way more noise than you can tolerate. It's usually attributed to crappy wiring in the apt, house, or club.

I'm thinking of dumping some of my cheaper A/B and A/B/Y boxes, and investing in the Fulltone True Path. That unit solves any gremlin that could rear it's ugly head.

Re: NAD: Vox Content

What germanium overdrive are you using with the Vox? Do you like what you get? I have never played through any germanium pedals and am intrigued. .

I use the Big Muff Germanium 4. I love that pedal. It's easily my most used pedal. It's just enough grit for me.

Cool. . .that's good to know. I have seen the Geranium 4 demos but never heard one in real life or had anyone recommend it who uses a Vox. .

Gig it out a couple of times. Up and down narrow stairs into bars and venues. Load it into your vehicle a couple dozen times. Have some cables go out on you and not have enough to set the whole thing up. Play on a cramped stage with barely enough room for drums, let alone two guitarists and a bassist.

That is why not everyone uses a stereo rig. They sound amazing, but just aren't practical for most people :)

Good setup, I bet it sounds awesome.
