NAD x 2

I've been holding back on this info for a while but I think it's time for the reveal.

The Bogner is gone. It was an awesome amp and it did it's duty with distinction, but the time had come for me to move to something that was a bit of a better fit for me.

Plus, having all that $$ tied up one big amp meant that I could have had two other amps that would probably satisfy me as well. So here we go...

"M" #1 - Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Tremoverb Head.

"M" #2 - Marshall 1987X Plexi Reissue

I was gonna take the Plexi to Dave Friedman's shop to have him turn it into a Marsha or a Naked but I kinda dig the way it sounds stock and wanna keep it that way for a while before I go messing with it.

I really dig them both. Like I said the Bogner's an awesome amp but the Boogie just - I dunno how to say it - fits my style and my music better. It adapted itself to my rig almost immedately and further tweakage only made it better. Just enough options to be really versatile and for me to use them all, and no more. It's a shame they discontinued these. I like them much more than the Dual Rec Solo heads. The tone seems more organic and fatter and juicier. The built in verb is nice (and something you don't get on a DR Solo head) but the real secret weapon is the built in tremolo. It's just plain cool. Clean tones are excellent and the drive channel rages. The Blues mode has that fat, nasty, somewhat dirty and reckless sounding breakup and the modern mode is just a beast. Love it. I can switch it down to 50W if I want and choose tube vs. SS rectifiers just like with the current ones. I plan to convert the effects loop to a series loop (never did like the Boogie parallel loops) but all in all I really do love this amp because it fits my needs tonally and practically.

The Plexi... well what can I say? It's a Plexi! Crank it up and let it rip for that old-school sound. I'm planning on experimenting with the pre and power tubes to refine it a little bit but with the channels jumped and the volumes dimed it screams just like it should. My Boogie can get louder and has more headroom, but this is a different kind of animal. I can't wait to put a drive pedal in front of this amp (or the Boogie for that matter) and REALLY see what it can do.

So... yep. There it is! I'll have to get some better pics for my files and the Post Your Rig threads. :D

Re: NAD x 2

Congrats :bigthumb:

I used one of the original "Plexi" 50W 1987 reissues for 10+ years. Fantastic amp- and a 1987 period is my fave Marshall tone by far.

I think swapping tubes is your best bet to tweak-everytime somone one mods a plexi, or metalface, or like yours, a plexi panel with 73/74 metalface specs ;) something special about these amps gets lost in the process, despite what may be an improvement in other areas.

Re: NAD x 2

Wow, they look great!

Gotta love two for the price of one.

I always knew you'd come back to the Marshall club :)

Congratulations!

Re: NAD x 2

Heck yeah dude. Your logic is like mine. I hate having so much money in 1 amp. I'd much rather have many amps!!!

LOVE IT DOOD!

Re: NAD x 2

Tremoverb is a sick head. Kind of missing my old one. So much versatility. You mess around with the channel cloning aspect?

Re: NAD x 2

I tried to get away from the Recto sound a number of years back. After buying and selling a number of amps I wound up trading for another Recto. The moment I plugged back into one it was "Oh yeah. That's what I'm talkin' about."

Re: NAD x 2

Awesome! So much ground covered with those two amps.

Yep! That's kind of the idea. I was going for kind of a Venn Diagram thing with how these two amps would work together, and for the most part I think I got it. The Marshall handles all the vintge and old-school tones but can get pretty cranky and mean, while the boogie gets the modern-sounding stuff but can also back off quite a bit.

Yeah, which is why I'm holding off on modding it right away. The mod would change it into a completely different amp (the Freidman amps) which I've tried out and also like, but I just wanna hang with the old-school sound for a while.

congratulations. Are you planning to run both at the same time?

I'd like to but it's probably not practical for most rehearsals or gigs. Plus I've got one 2x12 and one 4x12 so I dunno what kind of balance I'd get. But using them both for recording? Definitely!

Yeah, I love modern amps and tones but those old Marshalls really have something that's hard for me to get away from. Thanks!

Good swap...now you have two very different ends of the spectrum!
That should cover some ground, and prevent you from growing too annoyed with one amp.

Yeah, having two different ones should keep things fresh.

I've played around with it. I won't be using it with my current band but it could definitely come in handy in the future.

Nice dude. Rock them loud. How do you like that Plexi so far?

I've played some older Plexis that were amazing - rich and smooth and everything you'd want them to be. I've also played a few that were stiff and honky and abrasive and not really my thing. Coparatively, this reissue one is actually pretty nice tonally. Still some quirks about the sound but I wanna pick out some nice tubes for it and get the bias checked - that will probably change things. I'm not a big fan of him in general, but I do love the tones Yngwie Malmsteen gets out of his Plexis, especially on a tune like Stronghold. If I could nurse the amp into that range I'd be really stoked.

I have a Tremo-o-Verb as my "at work" practice amp! It's a 2x12 combo.

Loud as all hell!

Yep, they're little monsters, aren't they?

I tried to get away from the Recto sound a number of years back. After buying and selling a number of amps I wound up trading for another Recto. The moment I plugged back into one it was "Oh yeah. That's what I'm talkin' about."

Yeah, there's realy only one way to get that Recto sound and that's to buy a Recto. IIRC you have one of the early ones that, to my ears, sound a little better.

That's what everyone keeps telling me, but I think it's largely over-stated. It's true that the early Rectos were better at the crunch thing, but I think the later models were better at the saturated high gain thing.

Then again, maybe my amp just needs a cap job....

I think my green eyed monster is starting to show himself.
That just makes me sick!
Congrats man, enjoy!

Re: NAD x 2

it's like the Bogner was a one-celled organism that fissioned into 2 organisms -- but a mutation was introduced that added the trem and verb genes, resulting in the longevity of the species or something
