NAD!

Just took delivery of a Laney AOR Pro Tube Lead 50 today. Even with a banged up box, thank you UPS, the head was in excellent condition. Seriously, other than two small dings it looks like somebody bought this back in the 80's and kept it in their bedroom ever since.

Fired it up, with the no-name tubes, and it sounds tons better than the pre-AOR (no pull pots) Pro Tube Lead 100 I had with Mazda tubes. The new Laney sounds every bit as good as my late 60's Traynor YBA-1. To be fair, though, the Traynor needs to be recapped. However, if the recap doesn't make the Traynor significantly better sounding then I can't see a reason to keep it around.

All hail the Laney!

Pics of my babies.

Gotta replace those horrid red knobs on the Traynor with some black chickenheads...on the to-do list when I recap it and do general maintenance. The blonde combo in the background is my 1960 Gibson GA-8 Discoverer. What a little screamer!

Congrats!! old laneys can rip! A bud of mine had one (dont recall model) and loved it. I rmember first time I saw Ratt. that was the first time I saw Laneys. I dunno why, I thought the pro tube was SS tube emulation and not real tubes or hybrid.

Re: NAD!

Nice! I have the combo version of that amp. I gigged with it for years. They're built like tanks and they can kick some serious ass when you get them going.

Congrats! :beerchug:

But those who have 'em, know the secret.

Re: NAD!

Congrats! I have a PT30 which has a similar tube complement, but 2x 6V6s ... Never been able to get a really killer tone out of it, but cannot sell it as it was my first 'real amp'. About once per year someone on these boards gets one and I pull mine out again and spend a weekend trying to get a killer tone out of it. Maybe this weekend ... :)

Re: NAD!

The amp really gets the good when the Master is above 6 and the Preamp is above 7 or 8. It's loud at that point, but I don't find it anywhere near painful or obnoxious. Of course, my 4 year old daughter complains...even though I'm in the ground floor basement, and she's upstairs.

I finally played around with the pull boosts. The bass boost adds very little compared to what all the online reviews say. Treble boost gave no noticeable change. But the mid boost is where it's at! Big jump in volume, and moves the mids up to a higher frequency...very cutting. I like it!

BTW, the tubes have no brand markings. The preamps have "ECC83" in red silkscreen, and the power tubes simply have "Marshall" screened on them in a tan-ish color.

Re: NAD!

Too bad about the UPS (United Package Smashers) guy. He tried so hard to do his job and smash the package, but it survived. He'll have to try harder next time. :biglaugh:
