Didn't the Champ originally come with an 8" speaker, as it wasn't intended to be used with guitars?

yes and yes.

im surprised that the champ doesnt breakup when cranked up. not a bad thing, but ive played some bf champs and they definitely get raunchy over 6 on the volume. could be a bunch of things but if it sounds good i wouldnt worry about it.
