NAD!!!

Re: NAD!!!

Dude, that thing sounds killer! Nice cleans and the dirt sounds like old AC/DC or Van Halen.
Is that Marshall cab open or closed?

The other night I was coaxing 70's Santana type tones from it.

Cab is closed back.

Sounds even better now that I switched to the other 2x12. The amp is fairly bright, the newer cab I used in the video is still breaking in but the JCM900 series version is 20 yrs old and the speaker has a nice low mid growl.

I've owned some nice amps and some real stinkers... this one is a nice amp at the stinker price. They even paid attention to all the fine details. You have to go out of your way to find the seam in the tolex. I've had much more expensive amps with horrible tolex jobs.

Re: NAD!!!

I definitely see their quality rising. I mean, c'mon a CNC machine doesn't give a d-mn what ethnicity you are. I've been a machinist for 30 + years. I recently purchased a Sterling Sub Silo 3 made in China and the quality and set up were spot on. $160 delivered. Seriously. One of my "keepers" for sure.

Re: NAD!!!

6l6s?? cool!!! Id love to have a little high gain amp with 6l6s. most all the small amps have El84s.

Did I read you had one with 5 watts? Youve got a little Wang.

It just barely reaches high gain territory, but put an Overdrive in front set as a boost and it doesn't take much to get a respectable metal tone. It's a bright amp, but has a big full bottom. The controls are really interactive with a lot of sweet spots. All EQ at 0 actually sounds decent. Like a woman tone type sound. Turn the bass up, add some mids and a touch of treble and presence and you're good. I suspect the brightness is due to its being based on a Fender model, not sure the exact one, but fenders in general have always sounded bright to me.

And as for the "little wang"... you his they say it's not the size, how you use it? That definite applies to the Mini 5. Some have compared it to a 5 watt Twin with the tube rectifier engaged. Set it to diodes for the rectifier setting to get less sag and crank the volume and it's more like a 5 watt Plexi. And unless pristine clean is your thing, good luck using it in a dorm or apartment. It's 5 LOUD watts. Lol

Re: NAD!!!

thanks for the addl info.. Clean Fendery tones are not my thing. My Splawn has a respectable clean, but gain is where I roam..

Id seen these before somewhere and heard good things there as well..

I live in the dirty channel too. It's got a very nice overdrive sound. Even with the gain dimmed it's really touch and volume knob responsive. It's a nice sounding dirt. I don't know what to compare the dirty channel to but I did manage tones that reminded me of 70's Santana. Some sort of modified Fender would be my guess.

Re: NAD!!!

Took this out if the house for the first time fora jam with some friends. It's got a surprising amount if power. The brightness that I've been hearing seems more a product of the room I'm playing in at home as I has to turn up the treble and presence.

Big sound from this amp and while the drummer bowed out due to a groin injury, the amp kept up with a Roland guitar synth into a 1000 watt PA. It loves to be cranked.

I've also found out that it's a modified Fender Bandmaster circuit. It's great for blues, classic rock and 80's style metal. An OD or Boost out front makes this amp really scream. Using the clean channel, which did little more than compress a bit with the gain cranked and beyond noon on the master volume control, you can get those high gain modern metal tones using a good quality high gain pedal like the Palladium, Wampler Sovereign or Suhr Riot.
