Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

Is it possible to convert a solidbody guitar into a semi-hollow by routing tone chambers and making a cap to fit the body ? If so, would a Flying V shape resonate well ? I think f-holes would look good on those wings...

Re: Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

I doubt it. I think that would just be a chambered guitar.

Nothing says that you can't do it, at least nothing I can think of, and that isn't much but one thing pops in my mind. A chambered V might be a bit lighter than you'd like to and cause balance issues.

Plus a V doesn't have the shape of a normal hollow or semi-hollow so I doubt you'll be getting near a 335 or something.

Just some thoughts, let other people guide you better.

Re: Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

I'm planning on doing this on a Tele-clone I built years ago. It's solid mahogany and very heavy and also not very resonant, so I reckon some chambers will help with both problems. There's no real monetary value to the guitar so I don't mind risking it.

But I'd agree with the previous post: my experience of V's is that they are already quite light and a bit neck-heavy, so I would be careful about this mod.

Re: Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

it'd be unique!! ... depending on the cap you'd lay over the routes, you might (more than) make up for the weight so as to fix the balance issue ... you'd have to be mindful of the thickness you'd be adding to make sure the neck still was seated appropriately ... the shape doesnt lend itself to resonance in the traditional way, but you could get some cool properties depending on the resonance of the top ... you'd have to think through the routing of the electronics too

good luck and have fun!

Neat idea!
I posted a lot when considering a chamgered gtr and the concesuns seemed just as mentioned above- It will change the tone (surprising to me that many thought it added high end)- But because the center block and tailpiece is traditionaly not routed, most feel you wont get the hollow body sound at all- For that sound, the top and back to some degree need to be accoustically resonant and this doesn't happen with chambering-

Looking forward to hearing what you do!

Thanks for the feedback and enthusiasm! Given that I've never seen a semi-hollow V, I thought that maybe there was some obvious tonal reason for not making one, but apparently not. What woods (and what thickness) would be appropriate for the top?

i'd have initally thought maple.. add some of the les-paul zing!

other than that, pretty much anything will work, but i'd definitely go for a hard wood if possible, you don't want a fragile cap! maple, koa, even something more exotic? :)

Thanks Imp.

Well, here's a quick simulation of how I imagine the thing. Apologies for my poor Photoshop skills.

Are those TV jones pups and a 5 way selector? sounds like jangle supreme from here!

Re: Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

I think that would be really cool if you could pull it off (especially the Filter-tron's), but you would definitely have weight/balance issues.

Re: Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

Re: Naïve question (semi-hollow content)

OK, I'll watch out for the weight thing. Maybe I could make the centre block heavier or something.

Zionstrat : I was actually thinking more along the lines of a 3 way toggle switch (easier to mount and takes up less space). If I can find some TV Jones I can afford, then yes, those are TV Jones. I might actually make the investment this time, as my first project (a cross between a Firebird and a strat) suffers from the cheap pickups I bought before I knew how it would turn out.

Thank you all for your thoughts, I really needed to know whether the idea was interesting or insane. I guess I can start hunting for parts now !

Kind of a sumb idea... but thats to be expected.

Why not add some weights to the fins? Still have some resonance and some balance.

That looks really nice. I hope it sounds good too. Please let us know the result when you get done. Good luck.

You might be able to get something like this from Warmoth. It'd save you a lot of trouble of doing it yourself.

But then he wouldn't have the pleasure of doing it himself ;).
