Name some brutal albums that use the Marshall JCM900 amp!!!

Hi, if my new Bad Monkey Overdrive pedal, which comes tomorrow, doesn't satify my needs regarding the jcm900 combo then i am selling it.

as far as tube amps go, if they need cranking to sound good then they are pretty pointless for me anyway at this stage.

Also what kind of an amp comes without a clean channel???!!??


So can anyone name some heavy albums that feature the JCM900. i Just wanna know what it is capable of before i go selling it. Maybe some early Nile album? not sure

hey there, if your not happy with you Bad Monkey pedal heres a link to a pedal that will kick your JCM900 in the A$$.
If you after a brutal sound that is articulate and has massive amounts of gain this is your answer.... it has soundclips also. Give it a listen, im sure you'll love it!

From the few JCM 900s I've played, it hasn't needed an overdrive pedal in front of it to goose the input. If it were a JCM 800, that might be a different story, but I'm surprised you aren't getting enough drive out of the 900 stock.

Only time I've ever heard a JCM period sound "brutal" is when layered with another amp.

Yep, you're probably right. When I played a few, I was happy with some hard rock crunch sounds I got out of it... I have no idea how it would sound with death metal or something.

I bet the 5150 would work for that style, no?

Just remember, don't max the gain on the BM. Get a good crunch setting on the amp, set the BM for low gain, high level. should tighten up the sound nicely. Good luck.

I wouldn't worry about the clean thing, just turn you guitar volume down and theres your clean.

I use a 900 COmbo. I like it a lot..... but I don't play metal. I get a good classic ROck/Bluse typ of sound without much effort. I rarely use the clean channel primarily because I A/B this with a Fender Super Reverb. Which is another great Amp for what I do. I do have a Marshall BLuesbreaker pedal in front of the 900 to push it a little when I need to.

As far as Albums that use this. When I saw ZZ TOP in the 90's (Recycler Tour) This was the Amps that they used. I don't know what they used in the Studio, but LIVE they sounded Awesome!! Its a good AMp for what I need and it does get a bad rap for not being a very good amp. I have had mine for over 10 years and it does what I like and need. The major thing I do not like aboout it is the Effect loop! It seems to deteriorate the quality of the Delay which is pretty much the only effect I use in it!

My best hard rock/metal sound ever was a JCM 800 and 5150 running together. I had to work with the tone controls on each of them a little bit...didn't sound that great by themselves, but together they could peel the paint off the walls. :bowdown:

I'm going back to that setup as soon as I buy a house and isolate a room.

It was never stated that the JCM900 that you have was ever a metal amp. It can do metal, yes. I play metal (classic metal like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc) through mine all the time and it has plenty of overdrive. If you're not getting enough, then there's something wrong in the chain somewhere.

ZZ Top used the Dual Reverbs on the Recycler tour I believe. Rick has the MkIII Hi Gain Master Volume. KISS did use the MkIII's on the Alive III tour, at least Paul did. Not sure what Bruce used. Probably the same.

How much more gain do you want?

nevermind. i am selling the jcm900 now. its just not for me. it's kind of put me off marshalls. I need something a bit more modern sounding.

some of the best tight bass palm mutes i have ever heard were from a marshall mg100fdx ss 100 watt combo, using a metal zone through the clean channel...no joke.

I think i may actually gonna go back to solid state, at lower volumes they are fine.

this jcm900 set to 25 watts is still too loud, its rediculous.

i am totally confused now. i thought getting a tube amp would solve my tone problems but no. i am back to square one.

i might try for a peavey xxl. tried the roland cube 60 and thought it was pretty crap for metal. i may resort to using line 6 modelling stuff gear like the pod xt. who knows.

Sorry it didn't work out for you. Sounds like you want more of a Mesa type tone. In which case, you need to go down that path. SS might be it. It was for Dime for many years. Good luck. But PLEASE, toss the Metal Zone. That thing is the biggest bee hive sounding distortion pedal out there.

I wonder if that BL USA has anything to do with the unsatisfactory tone. All the ones I ever played/heard sounded like @ss. You'd be better off with a Dimebucker or a real BL L500XL.

BTW, I don't have the cash for another amp but if I did, I'd snag that Marshall off ya.

Yeah, i tell you i did really dig the lead tone of the jcm900, it was awesome but the rhythm tone just wasn't right for me. i wish it had a clean channel too.

If i do go down the oath of using a pedal for my distortion i am either gonna try out a modeller or that morpheus distortion pedal i have heard good stuff about.

As for me being more after a Mesa tone you may be right but some of my fave tones come from marshalls, megadeth for example!!.

anyway thanks for all the help.

P.S, i think i will change the pickup very soon. its nothing sompared to the sh5 i used to own. but now i have a les paul for the first time and am not sure what kind of pickup to put in it.

Sure, you can put a link on the auction for people to go to for more info on the MkIII's. I have no problem with that.

Edit: You should be able to get a good amount for it. I've been seeing the going rates of the heads steadily rise over the last few months.

Powerman 5000 got a pretty mean tone on their "Tonight the Stars Revolt!" album using JCM900's layered with the VS100 heads.
