I love this guy's technique and note choices (which is probably the ONLY thing that matters when it comes to his tone) but I've got to know what that red amp is.. if somebody could please tell me

Didn't watch the clips...

I might be able to find out for you... but really...

It doesn't matter.

Nels is an amazing player.

The tone comes from his hands and his ears.

Plug him into a 5 watt Gorilla amp and it'd be just as mind melting.

For all I know... he might've plugged into a Gorilla there. lol

The good news is, Nels is one of those guys that Guitar Player watches closely (Him, and John 5. Go figure.) So, pretty much everything Nels does is the subject of a indepth article or lengthy review. Within the last few months, there was one issue that had an interview about the new Wilco album, AND a review of the the new Nels Cline Singers CD. I don't recall reading anything about a red amplifier, but they do talk quite a bit about his gear.

A couple years ago, I remember him mentioning a JTM45 that belonged to Jeff Tweedy that he was using and loving. That red amp looks to be along the same lines, but definitely not a true Marshall. Park, maybe?

all the info you need right there. Most of his tone comes from his pedals and when he is on a solo tour he plugs into whatever the venue has.

the thought of putting all those great fuzz boxes into the front end of a 5 wall gorilla solid state irks me..ha ha.. but yea I'm sure the sound will still be great with Nels playing... I had no idea that Guitar Player followed him.. thought he was sort of underground up until Jeff Tweedy found him.. he's not even really a "session" musician persay, he jus kinda plays around.. but yea I really would like to know what that amp is.. I've gotten rather curious of it.. I'm sure it is something like a JTM45 though.. in his website he said that he prefers his pedalboard in front of a low wattage tube amp

i've been a big fan of wilco and nels for a long time. I was really happy when they got together and I have been fortunate to see them a few times too. Each time I have seen them live Nels plays through Jeff's offset jtm45 that Marshall made a few years ago. great kt66 amp with a special cab. that is what was used to record that song on the album too.

Yep, from everything I've ever read about Nels Cline, he's always been about the Marshall JTM-45s.

please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the marshall JTM45 a direct copy of a Fender tweed bassman circuit?

yes. its made with different parts that were available in england but yeah, almost identical
