Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

A quick google search told me that Dunlop formula 65 contains silicon.

Silicon is pretty much the worst thing you can put on a guitar's finish to my understanding, so I'm saying DON'T DO IT.

If it's an oil finish, just use the same oil as the finish. Silicon polish is just an industrial by-product which pollutes tools and is impossible to clean (by my understanding).

a damp cloth would do. use warm water to dampen the cloth.

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

I wipe my guitar with a minimal amount of lemon oil... just a quick wipe then wipe off.

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

What about those Ernie Ball Fretboard wipes? I/t they're some kind of orange oil mix. I have some of those and I was wondering if they would work, cause I have a natural/oil finished guitar as well

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

Less is better…no chemicals is best…I prefer wood that doesn't need to be finished and maybe little bore oil on rosewood, ebony or ziricote fretboards (woodwind player made that suggestion and my rosewood fretboards have stayed in healthy for the last decade).

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

I complete my oil finishes with Minwax finishing paste wax. So then once a year or so I re-coat with that. It dries hard but it's capable of being "played" off. Really I just go by the way the finish looks. You can tell if the paste wax top coat is wearing through.

^ What do you use to clean your guitar?

I'll try to post pictures later. There's some white stuff (gunk) that "seeps" through the grains that I want to get rid off. Not sure if Lemon Oil will do that, and right now, Dunlop 65 kinda scares me.

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

I have a Peavey solid Koa bass that's natural finish and I called them to ask this same question. They recommended (their brand) Lemon Oil. I'm pretty sure any Lemon Oil would work. Still haven't tried it though. Just haven't gotten around to buying any.

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

Lemon oil for the fretboard and body? I presume it will also work for the neck?

Yeah I just go over the whole guitar and body really quickly. The neck is all maple and gets dirty marks which I don't bother trying to get out as long as all the gunk is off and it feels nice and slick. So wipe on and wipe off, whereas with a Rosewood board I let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe off. I also wipe over my bass, which is a sandberg ash bodied Basic 4, looks great!

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

^ Just gotten a reply from Washburn's customer service. They also recommend lemon oil or moist cloth. They didn't elaborate further, but I just wipe on and then off like you said, is the way to go.

Thanks!

Re: Natural/Oil Finish - Cleaning and Polishing?

I'll try warm moist cloth first...and then lemon oil... hopefully, either will work.
