Nazgúl for something other than modern death metal or Djent?

I know this is a fairly simple and probably dumb question to ask, but do you think the Nazgúl would be good for something like Old School Metal? Like Thrash or Speed Metal?

Also, has anyone tried it out on clean yet? How good is it? I'm just curious because I just saw a video on it and the tone was absolutely gnarly in this particular vid, and I'm thinking about giving it a whirl.

How could it hurt? The Nazgul, Black Winter, Distortion, Alternative 8, JB, Custom... I'd like to see an All Star jam with one of the greats each playing a different one.

My main deal is being able to get good cleans. I have to have those.

The cleans arent bad. Nazgul is super compressed. Lots of presence. Super tight

Old school, thrash, speed metal? That's the question I had for Keith Merrow not long ago, and he recommended the Nazgul. I got it in my Carvin DC800 and love it! It sounds great clean, as well as split.

You know, the compression my be a good thing. Just as long as there isn't extra gain. But honestly, my amp is too clean on the clean channel. If I need to dial back the gain, then I could.

For some reason, the Nazgul doesn't seem to be as hot as it should be. It's hot, tight, and aggressive sounding, just not super mega hot like Duncan's description makes it out to be. I also read at least one other review that said the same thing. It is a great pickup, though, no doubt!

I stay with EMG 81 and Duncan JB in all my hard rock/metal guitars.

I think once you get that radio tone in your head, you can keep tone-chasing and never be satisfied.

When I think thrash, I hear Hetfield and Mustaine.

This. The Nazgul really is not that hot. It's super clear under gain for sure.

Is this for the same maple neck, ebony fretboard, alder body jackson from before?

Yes, it sounds great split! Just had my DC800 delivered two weeks ago, Nazgul with only one volume (push/pull coil split). It does a really great job for single coil tones while split, bright and chimey. I'd assume it sounds the same for 7- or 6-string versions. I almost went with a Black Winter, but I'm pretty glad I went with the Nazgul for this build (maple neck-thru, alder body, mahogany top).

Thanks. The abalone in the diamond inlays and knob just work so well with the blue mist metallic. And the sides and back are pearl blue metallic.

I think its funny that everyone remembers all the inquiries I made about that guitar haha.

And you are right. It is for that guitar. I know it's crazy, but here soon I'm gonna be finally installing new pick-ups, and as per usual, I'm keeping my options open, and my GAS is constantly going everywhere.

Not trying to sound like an ass, but I feel like the Nazgul would be way dirty sounding. Just like way to much for a clear sound. But I don't know. How is it?

How do you figure it would be dirty or too much? The pickup is supposed to be kind of medium output with a rather focused and even tone. Every clip I've heard of it has always been pretty clean and tight sounding because that is what it was designed to do. It's not supposed to be a super hot pickup.

Not at all. It was marketed towards heavier styles of music and was designed to complement high gain amps very well. I believe it is actually weaker than the Duncan Custom and the Full Shred though I could be wrong as I haven't tried it.
