Nazgul not so hot?

Re: Nazgul not so hot?

The purpose of stats is to allow a person to make a decision with their money. You ever buy a sports car? If I do, I want to know how it compares to other models. BTW, your info lead me to get the ALT8, and I love that pickup. I just want to know as much info as possible when I buy. That doesnt make me an armchair anything, it makes me somebody that aint got time to do stuff over and over

Re: Nazgul not so hot?

I think the only accurate way to judge pickups is to play them. From what I was told, a Duncan Distortion in its stock form should be a phenomenal pickup, the stats checked out, and all the demos were phenomenal. I tried the pickup in my rig and it sucked. I tried it in 4 different guitars and it just didn't play nice in any of them. Plus tone is subjective and subjective doesn't translate well when brought to absolute terms, such as numbers.

Re: Nazgul not so hot?

I understand that info means it may not work with your guitar. But again, a point in the right direction is all I want. Here is a perfect example. I have a set of BWs that I want to try out, but I really have no idea which wood, scale length they would work best in. The guitar I want to put them in is very bright, is that a good combo or not? Do they sound better in a darker guitar? I know this, I buy enough stuff from SD and most of my info comes from the people on here, not from their site

I never said that stats didn't have their place. Nor did I specifically refer to you as an armchair quarterback. I was speaking of those who obsess over stats as if they were the end all and be all.
In the end, especially those of us with limited time and cash, you can do comparisons of numbers, sound clips and the personal opinions of others. In the end, you make a decision and see how it sounds with your rig.
Glad that the Alternative 8 worked out for you.

Re: Nazgul not so hot?

Truly the best way to judge a pickup is through the SDUGF, but even then the best you can do is give us info and we can give you subjective opinions based off our own experiences.

Re: Nazgul not so hot?

I'd never buy a car without test driving (Had Corvettes, Lotuses, Camaros, Datsuns/Nissans, Triumphs and others. If I believed what magazines said I should like based on stats, I would be driving something I hated.)

You can't quite try a pickup you like at the store like you would a car, but I have no prob. buying them just to experiment and selling them/returning them if I'm offended.

Re: Nazgul not so hot?

I tell ya whats funny. I can play a certain guitar with whatever set before crashing, think it couldnt sound better. Then the next morning I am like WTF happened? That bright guitar I have, a Schecter. I can pick it up, it sounds pretty good and the next day it sounds like a mess? I think those Schecter pups would sound great in a darker guitar. Just too much in the guitar I have em in now. Same with the Nazgul back to the OP I seemed to have hijacked his thread from. I loved them at 1st, then I began to be tired of their sound. So I tuned it down a half step, and have em split and I frickin love that guitar again. I need more guitars man, till I try every frickin SD ever made!!! LOL
