Nazgul vs Invader vs Pegasus E Standard tuning

I have a sentient in the neck and i like the articulation of the nazgul and the pegasus but im worrried that since they are designed for drop tuning, the lack of bass in the pickup will affect e standard breakdowns. What do you guys think? I play james hetfield, john petrucci style rhythms and jacky vincent style leads and solos (sweeps, trem picking, tapping, legato etc). The guitar is a Jackson Soloist with a basswood body, maple neck thru, rosewood board, and a floyd.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't think you will have a problem with the articulation in E tuning with the Nazgul. It is still percussive, and sounds tight as ever. The Invader is not as tight, but thick with mids and great in E standard too, but doesn't have nearly the articulation of the Nazgul. It has more mids than bass.

I have Nazgul's in two guitars that are similar construction to yours (one basswood, another alder, both with maple necks) and I like the Nazgul for thrashy riffs. It's very precise, articulate, and has a punch bottom end that seems to work well for that sort of rhythm. I assume you mean thrash when you say James Hetfield type rhythms? It definitely doesn't have the huge low end push other pickups may have for chugging but it's thick and meaty enough, at least it is for my taste. I play in D standard for reference.

I wouldn't be super concerned about the tightened low end. The bass guitar should handle most of the low end anyway. If it's a huge concern, look at the Distortion or the Black Winter. Plenty of aggression and clarity with a bit more low end chunk. I have all three in my herd and they all have their pluses and minuses. The Nazgul actually my favorite for thrash riffing due to how articulate and punchy it is. I have no experience with the Pegasus, maybe someone can chime in and help there. :beerchug:

well for your consideration, before going with EMG's James Hetfield used quite some duncans, first a Duncan Distortion and a Sh-7 (later relabeled as Sh-6n Distortion Neck) on his flying v, then he got a custom shop duncan set of unknown specs for his V, although the specs are unknown for us you can order that pickup set to the custom shop, he also played original Dirty Fingers on one of his explorers, around the time their (metallica's) best gear was stolen james got an Invader set on his V which he used for both Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, it was around the time of and justice for all that james made the switch to EMG's

so really i see the invader working a bit better for james style thrash rythm

Thanks guys! The guitar is actually nato which is similar to mahogany. I decided to go for something with alnico magnets (to pair with a sentient in the neck most likely). Im trying to choose between the jason becker perpetual burn, alternative 8 or the pegasus in the bridge. Any advice

i don't think the perpetual burn or pegasus will cut it for thrash output wise, but the alternative 8 is a really good, hits hard keeps tight and has nice body and round highs
