NBD

Re: NBD

I do believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that a one Gene $immons, from the classic rock band KISS played a one, as well as a Ripper.

You are now cool like Gene.

Re: NBD

Maya or El Maya was a decent copy brand of the late Seventies. In my opinion, after some customisation, you could have a workable instrument.

The original Gibson Grabber, Ripper and G3 basses had maple bodies. Your Maya appears to also have maple for its body. My only grounds for doubting this is the dark mark on the forearm contour. Is that a cigarette burn or a knot in the wood? Knots would imply Pine.

EDIT - Just found this photograph on another forum. Another knotty looking piece of wood. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/maya-grabber-copy-679290/

Any pics of the underside of the pickup? Is it just epoxy resin 'n' plastic?

I still suggest modification a la formula73 Gibson Ripper earlier in this thread. Find out what replacement pickguards are available. Rout the body to accept two or even three pickups. One Blackout Bass HB and two-band EQ might be enough. A Hot Jazz and two DiMarzio Will Power pickups would be worth considering.

Re: NBD

Aww man, I played a Grabber in high school jazz band, looked just like that one, just really a Gibbo. I'm kinda surprised that someone actually made a copy. I really liked that bass.

My brother had a black Ripper, ebony board, the one in these pics. He traded it for some weak ass mockingbird bass later on, bad decision. I've never seen another black one, me thinketh it's rare, not to mention it was a kick ass bass, and the Rich was a POS. I think he paid something like $300 for it back then, lol. He's always regretted it, he has one of the Epi copies now, but it's the natural. Not the same thing.

You can see the L6-S that I've talked about on here before in that pic too. That's not me (I'm playing drums), but that was my first "real" guitar.

Re: NBD

The Maya copy pickup is probably some generic humbucker.

The Gibson G3 pickups were designed by Bill Lawrence. I cannot remember whether he also designed the Ripper and sliding Grabber pickups.

At any rate, the sound does change when I slide the pickup around.

the top position is very very very round sounding, and the "bridge" position is very slinky sounding, with a pick its kind of in between Precision and Sting ray tones.

That would be the setting to use, then.

If the original electronics are shot, why not upgrade to a SD/Basslines STC-3M4 active EQ? There's plenty of room in the control cavity.

absolutely nothing wrong with the electronics. :)

man, this bass feels huge! If I understand correctly, the scale is a certain length longer than Fender right?
