NBD

Re: NBD

absolutely nothing wrong with the electronics.

'Twas merely a suggestion.

man, this bass feels huge! If I understand correctly, the scale is a certain length longer than Fender right?

So, measure it, already!

One source (Wikipædia?) claimed the Grabber scale length to be 34.5". Many five string basses today are 35". If you have only ever played regular 34" scale instruments, the change might throw you. If you are accustomed to switching, it will not trouble you at all.

Whack on some new strings and enjoy yo' bass.

I put on some La Bella "steel" strings. a lighter gauge, I think the G string is a .41 or something.

I'm not a fan of huge string gauges. I am used to playing Precision basses... I love the grabber because of how different it is... but now I recognize the genius and all around quality of a design like the Precision.

I love the thunderbird sound... but dislike the heavy neck dive. What am I to do?

I love the grabber but I'm not sure if it is a life-long partner...

on the body wood, I thought it was maple. the bass itself isn't very heavy as far as basses go, if that's any indication.

Re: NBD

In reverse order.

I suspect that the Maya Grabber is Pine.

The Thunderbird sound is the result of Mahogany and humbuckers. The Thunderbird playing feel is down to narrow string spacing and the way the thing hangs on a strap.

To combine your favourite Fender and Thunderbird aspects would require something like a Jazz Bass with humbuckers. I believe that such an instrument exists. Fender called it the Zone Bass.

If money were no object, I would suggest either the Fender Victor Bailey signature Jazz Bass or a Warwick Streamer Double Buck. If you only need one pickup, the (discontinued) Warwick Streamer Pro M might be the answer.

Re: NBD

So, Glenn. Are you going to accept the Maya Grabber bass for what it is? Are you going to attempt to make such alchemical changes as might make it be more like a Thunderbird? Are you going to just clean it up and trade it for a Fender-derived design?

Since you are keen on the Fender Blacktop and Pawnshop series guitars, why not check out the bass models? If your budget is tight, look at the Squier VM series. Their Jaguar Bass with PJ pickups and active treble 'n' bass EQ ought to be right up your street.

I like the bass. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it save for some playability issues. I've planned out how to fix those issues (the truss rod needs a little help to reach the straightness that would make the bass that much more comfortable).

I think in the future I will end up buying some American version of the P-bass.

Re: NBD

I can't believe no one noticed this, (although I don't read everyone's posts)
On the first 2 pictures in the thread - why does the bass look like it is tiny ? Do you live in a doll house ?
Is it just a trick of the lens ???

Re: NBD

well that helps

but you see what I'm talking about ?
the first 2 pictures are both blurry at the top and in the first picture the glass case looks like it is on top of a paperboack book
and in the second picture the furniture looks miniature and that the camera is in macro
