Nearly in the clear

Re: Nearly in the clear

It's like you have a baby on the way and don't know the gender, so you covered both bases

Re: Nearly in the clear

Lmao I painted my bass today haha. We should make it an Easter tradition. Paint one of my guitars on Easter. Lol. National paint your guitar day. uploadfromtaptalk1459122692396.jpguploadfromtaptalk1459122701076.jpguploadfromtaptalk1459122720690.jpguploadfromtaptalk1459122730676.jpg

Re: Nearly in the clear

Man, I WISH that was the product of only a days work. I was originaly attempting to reproduce the "TV Pelham Blue" that Epi used to do, and in testing, I figured out HOW to do it, but it requires laying down a PARFECT coat the first time. There are no do-overs, save stripping/sanding down to wood and trying again. I went through about three rounds of that before setting the body in the garage for the winter. Pulled it out last week to find that either a rat or (more likely) my dog had gotten in there and chewed on it, so I spent a day or so filling the damage and sanding back to the proper shape, before beginning the painting again. As before, it tiger striped almost immediately, so I abandoned the notion of doing a thin coat and just kept laying down paint until it all evened out.

I really need to just bite the bullet and buy a compressor and gun.

Re: Nearly in the clear

Rattle cans are almost the worst way of painting that could ever have been thought of. Metallics in can form are 'double-bad'. Its bad enough trying to do it with a gun let alone the crap nozzle-poor spray pattern-overly thinned can form of it. My project is the 'silverburst', and I think that I have 3 layers of the silver on there in order to eliminate some of the lumps that sprayed out.

Re: Nearly in the clear

Yeah, rattle can metallic is pretty much pure frustration.

I'm gonna go ahead and finish these this spring and then this summer start work on a baritone tele (carving the neck on my own this time). By the time it's painting weather again in the fall, I might be able to get away with buying a shooting rig. Seems like I may have to spend a few $$ to get a compressor that's up to the task.

Re: Nearly in the clear

If you are doing a guitar, then even a basic compressor of moderate size will do. Mine was a basic brand, with a capacity of perhaps less than you'd need for a full professional spray rig. But it does the job.

Re: Nearly in the clear

I was looking at the Makita Big Bore series. Saw it mentioned on another forum. There's a 3hp version for abou $350.

Re: Nearly in the clear

I shoot my clears with a $700 Sata gun, but that's because I use the same gun to do show cars. It's nice, but not necessary. A $30-40 gun from Princess Auto or Harbor Freight will do the job. In fact, that's what I use for my color coats.

I got a small compressor on sale for under $100. I have it linked to an old propane tank to give me enough volume to do several coats on a guitar with no problem. I'm back home next week, feel free to pm me and I'll send you pics of my setup and the downdraft booth I built for about $100.

I think I bought a $99 compressor.....in Aus$ which is about $70US

I've done about 20 guitars with it so far.

Re: Nearly in the clear

Do you happen to know the specs on it, with regard to cfm and psi?

Actually... And I've never thought about this before, but what are the preferred metric terms for those? Cubic decimeter per minute? Kilograms per square centimeter?

Don't know the specs really. Its above the 30psi for a gun by some margin, which is all it needs to be for that usage.

I think its one of those budget brands like Ozito or similar which do the bargain basement construction in China or Bangladesh where labour rates are very low. Its a good size in terms of capacity, but I wouldn't use it for anything else but hobby as it would die quickly if used all day-every day.
