Neck heaviness

Does anybody have a good remedy for a guitar being neck heavy? A rough strap *sort of* fixes it, but it still feels really unbalanced.

Any other ideas?

I WISH!!! My Kramer is very neck heavy...I just deal with it.

Re: Neck heaviness

You can change the position of the strapbutton, I believe that kinda helps except it's a little bit painful to drill another hole into your beloved guitar :smack:

Unfortunately, its an ESP Viper, and there is no better place :) If it'd work, I'd drill holes all over the damn thing.

The lead shot thing is intriguing, though... I wonder how much it'll take.

install a bigsby tremolo on it?
:laugh2: +1!

Actually, where are the strap joints? What is the guitar shape? Sometimes simply removing the strap joints and relocating them on the guitar can do it.

Re: Neck heaviness

this is one problem with certain body shapes and neck woods
i try to keep as much body wood in the guitar as possible if i know i'm going to have a neck heavy guitar
case in point - fatty's hollowbody with rosewood neck

i'd suggest you go to either a fishing store and get lead anchors or a chemistry supply place and get those little weights you put on a scale
then shove em into the control cavity and tape them in place
you m ay need a lot or a little

I've heard of people taping rolls of coins inside the electronics cavity to help balance it out. Filling the strap button hole and drilling a new one is a more permanent fix, but then you have to deal with refinishing as well.

Re: Neck heaviness

SGs are notoriously neck heavy and Vipers are similar. Once I switched to a suede guitar strap or at least a leather with a roughed up back, my problem went away.

Re: Neck heaviness

My Samick Cobra (SG shape) is neck heavy and after getting used to it, it's kinda nice. It takes the weight off your shoulders and puts it in your arm and I've gotten pretty comfortable with it.

In fact, Greg Bennett the designer makes a point of mentioning that in his description, that it's comfortable for those long nights on stage.
