Neck Humbucker Single Coil Help!?!

Re: Neck Humbucker Single Coil Help!?!

I don't know if anybody has mentioned our Custom Shop Strat under Humbucker pickup yet

http://customshop.seymourduncan.com/strat-in-humbucker/

We build these as true to form strat single coils, but we actually have recently developed a method to build a stack style pickup under the cover as well so you can get an awesome strat tone in the neck position without any of the hum.

If this interests you feel free to shoot the custom shop an email and we can workout a design that nails the tone you are after

Re: Neck Humbucker Single Coil Help!?!

I'm partial to the humbucker from hell, but that might be because it's the one I have the most experience with. An easy option that might work is a humbucker with the poles removed from one bobbin and wired in parallel to lower the inductance and and a small capacitor across the coils to shift the frequency response in the right direction, or just leave it as is. You could then use a cover or dummy poles. If your really experimental, you could remove the magnet all together , and shove magnetic strat poles in the active coil, and leave the screws is the dummy coil.

I prefer the Phat Cat and Seth Lover or Antiquity (without covers) for single coil tones over any true single, honestly. Outstanding pickups. All the bite you need, but fuller. Ekspecially if you change the magnets and/or partial split them.

I was researching candidates for this same scenario recently. The only humbucker sized, hum-canceling candidate that sounded closest to a single coil sound to my ears, is the TV Jones Magnatron. See the sound clips for it on their product page for this pickup. Note that (to my ears at least) it sounds more like a Tele single coil than a Strat single coil. I don't know if you happen to have a preference in that regard.

EDIT: I forgot about the Joe Barden Two/Tone Humbucker.. This one sounds like and markets itself as a Strat sound when split and is supposedly hum-free. I had forgotten about it because for my needs, I was looking for a pup that could take a gold cover or was available in gold-colored bobbins.

Two other options out there:

1) make any humbucker that has accessible screw coils sound like a Tele type single coil sound (and still be hum-free) simply by removing the 6 screws in the screw coil. Scott Grove discovered this one and he made a YouTube demo of it.

2) Use an actual single coil, and use this special pickup mounting ring available at Guitar Fetish.com so it fits in a humbucker sized slot.

Any experience with a Full Shred in the neck?

Yes, I have it in my Charvel along with a Duncan Distortion Bridge. I am really liking it for its versatility, it is single coil-ish enough to me, makes for a good rythm pickup IMHO and it really shines with high gain. Duncan Jazz neck is another single coil-ish neck hb I tried in the past. But these are not single coil-ish like a vintage strat, it is more of a punchier thicker sound really.

I'd go with a Stagmag in a Triple Shot.

Eastwood/Airline has single coil in humbucker size. There are also several gold foil pickups in humbucker size. I just came across this thread so I know I'm late to the game.

JAZZbridge in neck, turn 180, screws facing bridge. Humbucker low, screws high. Very bright sound. My 2 cents.

Arwin And All -
I also used a Trembucker cover, modded a Srat pickup (just a tad clipping on the bobbin, both sides) so the ends wound fit under, and the holes lined up with the poles. It took some modding and glueing, but I swear on my mothers' soul, it worked. And I WAS able to use the "pickup ring" screws to lower and raise the pickup.
I used glue and cardboard to narrow the Strat Spring screw holes so it would hold a regular Gibson ring screw. Again, on my moms' soul! Used it for about a year.

Re: Neck Humbucker Single Coil Help!?!

A lot of the 70's Japanese import "humbuckers" were really single coils in a humbucker housing, and those can be had for just a couple bucks!

Not sure they could do a Twangbaner in a HBucker housing, they'd have to cut the copper plate. I guess they could, but it would be expensive as it would require some elbow grease to cut it, size it, etc.

Well, if you are already getting a Custom Shop pickup, my guess is that they could come up with something that works. It all starts with asking what is possible.

Re: Neck Humbucker Single Coil Help!?!

Update: My current neck humbucker is an Air Norton. I removed the pole pieces and it gave me more of the single coil-ish sound I was looking for. Might try wiring that in parallel now!

The Tone Zone in the bridge is muddy in the bass when playing chords. Any ideas on a DZ replacement? Maybe VHPAF or 36th Ann? Or PAF Pro? The guitar itself is alder and kinda bright. Not overly bright but definitely on the bright side of life.

DZ bridge pup suggestions anyone? I play classic rock/classic hard rock in a cover band
