Neck pickup to go with the Duncan Custom

Re: Neck pickup to go with the Duncan Custom

Sounds like the Pearly Gates pickups are highly thought of around here. Maybe I should have tried a set in my Gibson R8 instead of spending so much dough on boutique pickups?

There are a few beloved PU's on this site, and PG's are one of them. Defintely worth a try.

The 59n is a great match for the Custom, although I've come to love the Pearly Gates neck because of it's less bottom heavy tone...which is better if you plan to play rhythm as well as lead on the neck. The Jazz neck is similar, but clearer and glassier. The PG has a bit more woodiness.

I'm with the Joneser here.

I've paired the 59 with a Custom in a few guitars and it works pretty well- but I've come to not care for the 59 neck much over time, so I'd also reccomend the PG (which I've come to love in the neck position).

The Jazz neck is weird- I've had it in one guitar with sub par natural tone and it totally woke the guitar up, and in another guitar with a fantastic piece of wood it was just sterile, boring, and clinical. So I'd probably go with a Jazz Bridge model for a little more oomph over the neck version.
