Neck Plate Question

Kind of a basic question here. But why do some bolt on neck strat style guitars have a metal neck plate and some don't? Is there pros and cons on either side?

I think the pros of no neck plate is you can round the edges/recess the screws of the heel to make more access. That's the only reason i would consider doing it that way.

Re: Neck Plate Question

Depends.

A neckplate can distribute force across a wider area but they are stiff and awkward. The counter sunk washer screws with a profiled heel is much nicer to play. If you use wood screws there is maybe a loss in strength.

I use stainless steel threaded inserts in the neck and machine screws 8-32 guitar/ 10-24 bass with steel counter sunk washers on a sanded profile heel. This has tremendous force and can pull the neck into the machined pocket. (Better sound as it allows better vibration between two pieces of wood. No loose spots or dead air between the neck and body. ) Dont over tighten!! Again huge amount of force in 4 machine screws. Its only wood! Wood screws are strong in their own right fipor sure but have limitations in the attachment method as well as ability to suck in the neck.

My 2 cents
