Neck profile look-ups

I keep running into walls, maybe one of you knows a quicker way?

I used to have a 1984 Gibson V that I swore had the best neck I'd ever played (even though the guitar itself was a bit past beat up). I can find info on LP's all the way back to the 50's, but not so much on the V's. I would really like to get the specs on that guy if I could.

Re: Neck profile look-ups

The very first electric guitar I ever held was my cousins 84 Flying V, I used to sneak in his room and pose in front of the mirror with it on. If memory serves it had a 60's thin neck but Gibson necks have famously been hand finished and there is always variance from one to another, so specs will be a bit vague.

Re: Neck profile look-ups

I've actually had 2 of those, and the necks were thicker (or more narrow?) than the Faded Vs from a few years ago. Thinner than my '93 LP Standard neck as I recall, but a bit wider. Didn't keep either of them long enough to record the full specs, but I do remember not liking the mini-me frets. Only reason I got rid of them, really. Had they come with medium jumbos, I'd still have them. Rear-loaded and Kahlered Gibson V - hell yeah.

Big Ugly was the biggest trainwreck you've ever seen, some teenage kid had gotten a hold of it and amateur-hour modded it within an inch of it's life. Had been routed out and fitted with a semi-rusty Floyd, and had the laziest (and crappiest looking, I should add) basement paint-job you can imagine, could feel the ridges in the nitro where the purple and white had been taped off just by running your finger over the body. But, I got it for a song after checking the headstock serial numbers, and thought I could refinish or restore it. When I got it home and plugged it in, though, it sounded and played so well I just left it alone for a while, eventually just swapping out the pickups with a 496/500 combo I had. It became a huge joke with the guys I played with because it looked like such a POS, but was a great playing guitar, and the neck was heaven!

Had they come with medium jumbos, I'd still have them.

Why am trying to find out, am pricing out a Warmoth build and if I can get a similar neck with 6130 fretwire, I'd be in hog heaven.

Have you tried contacting Gibson? Maybe they would know or know of someone who would...just a thought

...and Warmoth is awesome btw ;)

I haven't played any Vs from that period, but I've played a few mid-80s Explorers which should have a similar neck profile. The nut width seemed to be 1 11/16" which is one of the standard Warmoth options. The neck profile was pretty close to my '96 Explorer, which is between the '59 LP profile and the '60 slim taper. Of the available Warmoth back shapes, their 'Standard Thin' would probably be closest.

That's what I was planning on getting, figure is closest to what most Strats and non-SE Gibsons probably are to begin with. Was just curious.

And I've played Explorers from the same period, and you're right, they're very similar. Just not the same as a Fender, which made me throw caution to the wind... can't return a custom neck!

Re: Neck profile look-ups

I had an '84 Explorer as well, but it had been extensively modded and the neck was definitely not as wide as the V. However, it still had those idiotic micro frets.
