Neck pu for clean stumming and lead solos?

Hi -
I have an Ibanez RG550 (basswood body, maple neck/fingerboard, locking trem) with a Duncan Distortion in the bridge. I also have a neck humbucker which I need suggestions. I am using a push/pull pot so I only have access to full bridge and full neck. I need a neck pickup which can do both clean strumming and still be good for rock solos. I currently have a Dimarzio Super 2 in the neck which I do not like.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
jeff

I too am a strummer! If you're looking for a neck pickup with a nickel cover, I love the Seth Lover neck model. Highly recommended.

The Pearly Gates neck is also a great one and has a little more cut or sizzle to the treble...great for strumming or for soloing. Comes in zebra or black.

The other one I like a lot has more bass than the Seth, less mids and a beautiful sparkling high end with extended harmonics, and that pickup is the Duncan Jazz neck.

The Jazz can do anything from jazz or country clean to hard rock.

I have a feeling you'd like the Duncan Jazz and it's also Seymour's favorite neck humbucker.

For the Metallica album that is pictured on your avatar, I would've went with a Hot Rodded combo (supposedly around that time Metallica was using that combo, as Megadeth still is). However, I'd try a Jazz neck if you want ultra-clean. It combines well with other pickups, or at least with the JB.

Yep...it's not ultra clean though. The Jazz is not that much differant from a 59n...just a little more top end and a little less bass. Duncan ought to rename the Jazz to the Jazz Rock or something because the Jazz name makes people think it's a super clean pickup and it's not that much differant from a 59n. Lew

Sounds like an APH to me. Killer clean tones and awsome lead tones. Takes all the gain you can throw at it, and still remains articulate. For those who don't know:

Playing the APH is like slipping into a tub full of warm honey, splashed with the essence of virgins.

Yeah, and the name "Jazz" seems to imply (at least to me) old-school, but the sound of the Jazz is more modern to my ears. It can be made to sound old-school using effects, but not as well as pickups meant to sound old-school by design, such as the A2P and '59.

Full Shred sh-10n. Best pup for the neck, Clear with maximum pick attack.
That Super2 you have in the neck is actually a very nice bridge pup.
Try it in the bridge on another guitar with a Dimarzio PAF in the neck.

The Super2 is like the Super Distortion with the muddy frequencies rolled off.

Hey frehley -
Do you know how the Super 2 compares to the Duncan Distortion (my fav metal pu) in the bridge? If it's comparable, i might keep it, otherwise i would sell/trade it. It sounds muddy in the neck (to me anyways).

I agree with the Jazz

ALSO YOU SHOULD CONSIDER the Dimarzio Virtual PAF bridge model for your neck. It has a nice fast "feel" articulate, and does high gain solos, well. Very flutey.
