with a '59 set (in a les paul, is that what you have?) i like to keep the neck pup low with the pole pieces raised a bit and the bridge pup high with the pole pieces flush with the top of the bobbin. a mag swap to a4 or uoa5 helps reduce the boominess of the neck. i used to run a 59n/sh5 combo in a sg and loved it

An A4 in the neck and an A8 in the bridge pup will do the trick.

It is a Les Paul Standard. The neck pickup is as low as it will go without it recessing below the ring. The bridge could probably come up a little. Both have the covers on them. I've wondered about the adjustment of pole pieces. Would they be adjusted flush with the top of cover? Is it common to go well below or above cover? I know at some point it will be too much. What is the guideline as far as tone, volume and balance? The swapping of the magnets sound interesting, where can those be purchased?

You can adjust the poles to any height that sounds good to you. The higher they are adjusted out of the body of the pup, generally, the lighter the tone (poles being at the same distance from the strings in each case). Keeping the poles at the same distance from the strings, lowering the poles and raising the pup will give you a beefier tone.

I will try that. Thanks! I like the look of covered pickups lately, it hasn't always been that way. When I first got the guitar which was back in '91 it had uncovered black Dimarzio's in it. A Steve Morse sig in the neck and a Al Di Meola sig in the bridge. They looked good, being a black guitar with creme binding and pickguard. I can't remember what they sounded like. I've always been a SD fan so I changed them. I've still got them, I may have to give them another listen. It's been awhile.
