Neck PU to pair with Custom 5 in SG (59 vs jazz vs Pearly Gates)

Me Again !

So, as I'll put A2P/Slash into my Les Paul for blues to hard rock and will probably go with an SH6 into my Jackson to make it a thrash axe (and SH5 into my tribute 70's SG for low tuned metal), my Standard SG (standard tuning) has to be sort of an "in between the LP and Jackson" if that makes sense.

Therefore, I'll probably choose SH-14 Custom 5 in the bridge position, would be my only mid scooped pickup, so my only worry would be a different kind of taste in the worst case anyway.

On the paper, it looks like the SH1 59' neck match perfectly the Custom 5.

But I also wonder about Pearly Gates and Jazz necks.

I'm guessing the Jazz could brighten a lot the SG and makes something way different than the A2P in the LP.

I was thinking of staying with Alnico 5 for both position, but I'm wondering if the Pearly Gates is a good fit as well ? Would a PGn/SH-14 would make sense in a SG ?

Maybe the middle position would benefit from the added mids from the PGN and its sharp and trebly nature might clear up the SG neck too maybe ?

On paper though, '59 seems to be the ideal Custom 5 buddy.

'59N's are great in SG's, especially paired with a SH-5. For me, PGN's are a little too warm. Depends what you want from a neck PU.

I'd naturally say : warm, creamy, smooth etc.... but considering I'll have that with A2P in the LP, I'm definitely looking for something cleaner, sharper etc... on the SG.

The PGs or the Jazz would work. The 59s have a bunch of bass too, which some people don't like.

Not in SG's. Bassy '59N's are an issue with LP's.

For a 'cleaner, sharper' tone in the neck slot, '59N's and JazzN fit the bill, a PGN doesn't.

The placement position of neck pickup in SG would benefit '59 (less bassy) and PG (less warm).

The 59N was bassy-boomy in my Yamaha RGX Super strat.

Last year, out of curiosity, I looked for threads about boomy/bassy '59N's over a several month period, and found about a dozen members had personally experienced that. I think all but one or two specifically mentioned LP's as the guitar used. There's a definite correlation there with the fat mahogany bodies. With other guitars, not so much. I think the thin bodies of SG's are much less prone to sounding bassy.

The '59n will work great with the Custom 5.

The physical placement of the neck p'up in the SG assures that, as it's placed in the same spot as a 24-fretter.

HTH,

Ahhhh! That explains it.

This, I think, is why I never liked the neck pickups in an SG compared with many other guitars. The neck pickup is in the wrong place! (for me)

Ok guys, will stay with the custom 5, but it's gonna be probably a toss up between the 59 and jazz. Maybe the price will deceide (they should be on the same price range, as I want 4 conductors, maybe the 59 with 4 conductors option is more expensive, will see ! If it's the same price or similar, 59' was my first idea)

Re: Neck PU to pair with Custom 5 in SG (59 vs jazz vs Pearly Gates)

Pearly Gates neck with 500K pots is my very favorite Duncan neck pickup...I love it. However, using it with 250K pots will result in a tone that I think is dull and lacks treble.

I used to pair the PGn with Duncan Custom in a two humbucker Strat and was very happy with that combination. Master volume and master tone in that guitar...two 500K pots.

The 59N gets a little to much bass for my tastes. Can get muddy.

The Jazz is simply to bright for my tastes unless you use it like Seymour does in his Tele-Gib with a JB and 250K pots. 250K pots might be appropriate in a guitar like that where you're using two very bright pickups.

Thanks for your input, I was thinking of putting 500K pots all around that SG.
