Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

So, I have been sold on getting the Duncan Distortion. Since I play a mix of Heavy Metal from APC/Tool, Kyuss, Dredg Progressive type stuff, to sh*t that would make kids pee their pants (Dimmu Borgir, Zao, Norma Jean, Unearth, As I Lay Dying, Lamb of God, Hatebreed, At The Gates, Bleeding Through, BLS to name most of 'em) I wanted to know what would be good for my neck pup. I want is to be pretty warm and smooth without that "so-much-mids that the note makes an "aww" sound when i play it" mid sound, not overly bassy (cuz its already gonna be in the rhythm(bass) pup postion) and can have all that plus maintain a nice/respectible distorted tone. Since I dont always play with distortion (just most of the time  ) It should still sound nice with a tid-bit-o-chord playing and softer stuff. It would rule if it sounded good with the DD also.
I play a Schecter 006 Elite (as the name implies) and i am dying to get rid of the Dimarzio's I put in there. For those of you who don't know much about that guitar, its a pretty heavy guitar (weight wise), has nice natural smooth sustain and nice bass. (I suggest it to anyone who askes to buy one or check out some other models, Schecters rule!) Mahogony w/ figured maple and a rosewood fingerboard. 3-way switch selector, yadda yadda...
To get to the point, what would go nicely in the neck position after reading all that. I heard the Custom works well but its not too smooth and it didn't look like there were neck models. I heard mixed things on the Custom Custom, some people said it was smooth, others didn't. I heard the JB was very nice but nothing superiorly special. Make any other suggestions if u want but I trying to stick between those 3, but I definately want the duncan distortion. Or If you know somehting better like put the DD in the neck and maybe a custom in the bridge, let me know! :burnout: THANKS AND HELP ME OUT PLZ!!! (they are gonna be X-mas presents :))

:offtopic: P.S. Just making sure, but the neck pup is the rythmn/top pup and the bridge pup is the treble/bottom pup, correct. I am just makin sure that i'm not confused! See YA!

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

For what you describe, I'd put the DD in the bridge and a full shred or A2P in the neck. The DD in the bridge with rip in that guitar for the styles of music that you like to play. The FS is one of my favorite neck pickups. It's smooth, great for soloing and very articulate. The A2P has those characteristics as well with a warmer tone.

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

In a mahogany/maple axe, the Pearly Gates is the best neck humbucker I've heard in a looong time. It'll do every thing from jazz, to funk, blues, rock, and metal without breaking a sweat.

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

i like the sound of a distortion in the neck, especially played clean. just my 2 cents, i'll shut up now.

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

Maybe you should consider a JB in the neck? Articulate, cleans up nicely, still high output. That said...my favorite neck bucker is a Jazz. It is clean (read articulate) sounding no matter what you play or if you're detuned. It still gets a respectable overdrive tone.

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

Thanks for your guys' advice. Well I know I definately want a DD in the bridge. I like how you guys say jazz is a good pup, and i know it is, but im not really looking to "play all different styles of music..." Im looking for what I described. Not to be a D*ck but its really important cuz i dont want to be let down again. Im gonna go check out that A2P. I think I have played a full shred in a RRV. I know theya re nice, but i never heard one in the neck. I check it out now!

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

Why not a Distortion set?

Also, just get one, check it out, if you don't like it, send it back and try something else.

Re: Neck Pup Decision, PLZ Help!

You can send back pickups after you installed them. The thing is i going to the Washington Msic Center with my recording class and we are getting huge discounts because my teacher is friends with the owner and just about everyone there, because he has taken his classes on a field trip there every year. I want to take advantage of this and try to get pups on discount while there. That and I dont want to be installing pups back and forth, I want to get it right the first time around so I can save time and money.

I really do like the Full Shred in the neck, its sounds ecpecially nice while clean. Not too bassey which is awesome. Ill probably get it if i can while there. Does anyone have any clips of them playing with the FS in the neck? If someone could give a link or something, thatw ould be awesome. Keep suggesting, I still have a week!
