neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

Forgive me for echoing what everybody here is saying but from you description is sounds like you really want a screamin' demon in the neck position. Don't be fooled by the 10k, it's 43awg wire so it's closer to a normal/7.5k 42 awg neck pickup than a custom in terms of output.

Caveat: I've never played one myself. I find the PGn fantastic but the bass isn't what you would call "tight" - then again for tight bass in the neck I normally just use a single coil.

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

have also tried that one. doesn't clean up the way I would like...at all. ;)

That very thing is one reason I'm considering making a change. Idk if mag swapping would help, but I need a little more dynamics out of it these days. If all I need is a thick lead tone though it's got it in spades.

yep. tried the DD and the DDn in the past. there's a reason they call it the Distortion. lol!

The closest I can get to Seth neck that I've personally had experience is the Antiquity. It haa nice cleans and sparkles. To me it isn't as flutey as as a PGn or APH-1n. I'm not sure if it's gonna foot the bill but imagine a Seth might. The descriptions I've read have been very classic PAF sounding.

P.S. - I personally find the Ants to be a little treble-heavy or sharp on the ear. But with the right value pots that's fixable and the overall classic-mellow tone is nice (I have my Ants in an Epi Dot).

I have a my Crazy 8 in my PRS SE Singlecut Korina. Paired with a '59. Those puppies are never coming out!! So perfect in that guitar

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

Has anyone tried a Crazy 8 and a PATB-1n in a Lester?
All p'ups in TB format are problematic to install in Lesters, specially in the neck position, as there's no slanted TB p'up rings currently available.

Having said that, an A4 PATB-1n is a thing of beauty in the right instrument, like in a Mayones Maestro.

HTH,

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

This is a Lester with a FR from the factory. I've not measured it out for a PATB, bit it's holding a f-spaced bridge just fine right now. Since the neck would be a regular neck spacing, I'd still have to defer to breaking out the calipers to be certain. Thanks for the pointers to prompt me to check those specs.

edit... both bridge and neck pup rings on the Epi clock in at 2.77", leaving .02" for the PATB specs. pretty snug, but close enough to warrant a try if that's a possible set to consider.

i have a CLASSIC 57 in neck and a 498T in the bridge position

you must add new electronics: orange drop, out of phase, bypass

and your guitar will be decent, good
but not excellent

c 57 is warm but not enough high ends for me

and the 498t in good but i prefer a sh4

not enough high ends too

but you will have the out of phase tone and it's amazing
split coils are very good too
clean sounds

The Epi LP that I had, ended up with a Jazz in the neck... tried the PG, but it just wasnt what I wanted.. was gonna try APII, but dropped in the Jazz I bought for the tele first. It didn't disappoint, so that's where I stopped. The cleans to me were great, and not too much boom or overly bright. Kinda like a perfect balance, to me anyway. Dirty it was awesome... I dig Slash's neck tone, and Warren Haynes.. could do both without a hiccup. Since you got it, I'd try it. IME I loved it... which is nothing new there, I know... I just never got along well with the LP itself, no matter how hard I tried.

figure I'd have a little fun and take a stab at a mod on the 59/J A4 neck in the Epi LP. I took some spare SD hex pole pieces and put them in the '59 screw coil. as expected, it did tighten up the boom a bit and made the lead work cut a little more.

I've continued to go through every SD neck I have in my shred sticks... Éclair neck, Concept neck, S-Deco A4 neck, Jazz A4 neck. I'm not seeing how any of them would translate to the neck of the LP. so... I have a Jazz neck model on the way. I'll put the pole pieces in that one to end up with a FS/J neck hybrid ( :naughty: ) and still go with an A4.

while checking around on some options, I did see some things about short magnets. like a short RCA5. does anyone have any handle on those mags?

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

I tried out the suggestion that you made to me about putting an A4 in my DDn and I think it sounds fantastic. And that is in a bolt on agathis bodied Ibanez. I imagine that it might sound even better in a set neck mahogany LP as it tends to bring out the sound of the wood without adding or subtracting anything.

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

looking for a neck model that is going to have a voicing like sparkling bright upper mids and highs with punchy tight lows... both through a clean amp and able to take it through a high gain amp.

It's hard to think of a neck pickup with punchy, tight, lows. I'm looking for one as well, albeit one which is not overstated, balanced across the frequency spectrum, and crisp, but warm. But what comes to my mind from your specifications EQ-wise is the 59/Custom Hybrid, the Black Winter neck, and what sounds perfect on paper, the Ceramic Pearly Gates.

Sweet.. can't wait to hear about that

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

I'd like to start with a pup that's closest to what I want and then go from there. Any suggestions for a neck option that's going to be less boomy than this one? Looking for an open and articulate voicing that won't fart out on the low end.

You are definitely describing a Demon!

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

I'm telling ya, I've read all of your posts describing what you want. The Demon is IT!! Gonna have a more even EQ than the FS/J A4 and you don't even need to hybrid it. Even the stock A5 mag sound terrific in it, but easy to try A4 if you wish.

Just drop in the Demon and stop your search.

Re: neck pup for Epi LP Plustop Pro/FX

I do totally appreciate that and I do dig your opinion. And this is going to make about as much sense as a bucket with a hole in the bottom, but I have personal reasons for not going with a Demon - in any position in any guitar. Also, I'm not going to any big trouble for the FS/J. Just putting some Duncan hex poles in the one coil. ;)
