Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

Re: Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

As an example of imports improving, I began playing guitar in the mid 90s and I never recall seeing things like EMGs or neck thrus on import guitars before the early 00s. Now even active EMGs are fairly standard on imports, and the thrus are more common.

Who gives a **** about emg's anyway?

Found something nice here, Import 70's neck through.

The point was active EMGs used to be considered a major upgrade. Now not so much.

Sometimes EMGs are the best tool for the job, although these days I prefer Blackouts. I don't worship SD all the time just because I use their forum. :)

Re: Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

In the mid 80's Robin guitars were made in Japan and were Neckthrough... ESP had a ton of import neck throughs. The jackson professional series in the early 90's had neckthroughs. Neckthrough imports are not a new thing.

For some odd reason, EMGs sound good and sweet. Other pups do as well, Seymour Duncan livewires classic neck are one of my favorites.

Re: Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

Thanks Kramersteen. Close maybe but no cigar. I'm not big on a single in the neck when I can have 2 singles or a humbucker.

And I'd prefer something in the US, as those import fees can be steep and our dollar is crap right now relative to Canadian and Aussie money. :)

And I like EMG HZs for some things. They have warmer transients to my ear than the active versions, and on top of that they are split able without having to resort to the 81tw/89.

Edgecrusher, true. Neck thru imports seem more common now, is the point I was trying to make.

The new Charvel Desolation series seems like a great value for the higher end models.

I already linked you a jackson soloist that you can get from musicians friend

Re: Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

"The big changes come from a true custom where you can get the luthier selecting compatible wood, and incorporating the small details you don't get stock."

I suppose, then, the best argument for a custom shop these days would be something similar to Matthew Bellamy (Muse)'s custom guitars that he makes for himself, rather than custom shop simply being better because the workers are more skilled and the components are of a better quality.

I've made several guitars quite literally myself, and there is actually a bit of a problem here - unless you buy a four or five figure sum's worth of wood, you'll never have enough billets to have a 'guarantee' of sympathetic pieces. Looking at the workshops of some of the 'real' luthiers I've seen on MLP shows a huge wood stock. They show me pics of their stash of braz R/w board and its over a hundred.

These type of builders (along with big firm custom shops - fender masterbuilt for example have the skilled guys of course) have the selection of wood and the time/client budget to get the right wood together so the pickups you have chosen will shine. My neckthrough Carvin is maple/alder - another popular neutral combo.

I too think you're overthinking this a bit. If you want a floyd and neckthrough something tells me you're more along the lines of a Vai/Satriani type player rather than a Gilmour/Page. If you add a roaring amp and a thick pickup like these guys do, the tonal signature of these two overwhelms the tonal signature of the base wood - in fact its what is wanted from the setup. Many of the 'shredstick' type guitars use basswood principally as it is a dry tonally neutral wood that won't affect the tonal balance of the pickup at all.

Re: Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

Lots of variables can change the height of a Floyd bridge. The only problem I see with a set neck is you can't shim the neck to get the correct height if everything else does not line up in a small window. I wouldn't do neck through with floyd for that reason.

Re: Neck thru and Floyd Rose--cross purposes?

I've owned bolt, neck through and set neck guitars..... sustain and tone all vary from individual guitar to individual guitar... My Jackson SL2H Select had less sustain than my Carvin C66. My Gibson SG from the early 70s has less sustain than my G&L ASAT Deluxe. My Dean usa Soltero made of all mahogany is brighter than my walnut Mike Lipe Virtuoso (this all about acoustic properties btw)....

these rules you have come up with are really silly to me man, just go try out some guitars...

I have also played a bunch of Carvin CT6s with floyds at their shop in Hollywood and they all sounded beefy as hell

BluesGuyJ, I've been to the same shop. Bought my MTS3200 stack from there in 2000.
